it’s all about power.
The stronger, or those with the potential to be strong make all the rules, even if because of propriety they have to go the long way around to get what they want.

Senior brother who is stronger than junior brother and wants the beauty in the sect therefore tries to protect his territory.

There usually is very little complexity in their mentalities.

Personally, I kind of hate romance in xanxia novels.
