Agree, plus an avoindant personality desorder. Although taking into consideration the background it is understandable.
The use of the plaques tipped me off the most.
It's frightening how common that is too; I wouldn't be half surprised if the character had to be saved from suicide at some point.

Hummm, hard to tell. Some people take it like "I have to live for the others so their sacrifice is not in vain" so although they "Wish to die", the force themselves to live in missery remembering the fallen as punishment. Human emoutions are complex and ambiguous laberint of pointless things, like all made up crap.

It's hard to tell what causes survivor's guilt, also. But my feeling is it would only affect those with extreme empathy for others, enough of a sensitivity to the needs of others, that the thought that these people are dead, and they are not, virtually haunts them. It's not so much "I shouldn't be alive" and it becomes "I should be dead", and they're more inclined to fulfill that reasoning. It's crazy, of course. People die for whatever reason they're going to die. if someone survives, they should see that new chance at life as a blessing not a curse.

You are reading it in a noble way. I got another proposal, those people have low self steem, so they now have a reason to feel like their life was a mistake. Outside from imaginary situations, through my limited observation, the people that feel "survivors guilt" were already a bit on the "I shouldnt be alive" bandwagon. Lets put an example of a soldier:
Guy had nothing going for him, didnt care if he lives or die, didnt have much desire to do anything else, one day says "why not" and joins the army. Here he doesnt have to think much, just follow orders, he joins an squad, now he "belongs" this are his "brothers" the family "he never had", the corps are his everything. One day everyone is dead and he didnt go away with them... "survivors guilt". The underlaying feeling is "why them and not me?" "They were better than me" etc etc.
So, I dont think is empathy, is just low self steem.
Loser mindset.

It may very well be low self-esteem. People need to stop feeling so damned sorry for themselves and look at the really awesome person inside them, and respect them, and love them. And if they don't, do what's in their power to change what they want to.

This is an opinion and just an opinion:
I think is the other way around. What do I mean?
Well, the last 50 years, our parents told us: You are unique, you are special, and wonderfull... Why?
I am just another dude, there is nothing special about me and we sooner or later will find out. I am not awesome, no one here is awesome. We are just people.
The problem is the comparison, we see people we think are "awesome": We see famous and rich people and we think they are "awesome" then we see our selves with our "ordinary" lives... not awesome.
But, Bill gates aint awesome, he is a weirdo megalomaniac, yes he has talent for business and computers... but is lacking in other areas.
Elon musk... a semi autistic prick.
Gal gadot: she is atractive, rich, good actor and a total creep.
Look how all those hollywood stars are fucked up in the head.
So who is awesome? Sthepen king the alcoholic drug addict?
JK rawlings and her unestable political and social views? a few years have some principles the next a few others.
They are just people, some got lucky, some are talented in some area, some are worked hard and sacrificed everything else.
No one is awesome, there is no shinning light insede anyone just a bunch of gray walls.
And that is ok. Low self steem does not comes from not loving "yourself" comes from loving others more than yourself couse you really see yourself inside and say "hey, this guy is not awesome" "He is no like X over there" the truth is X is as fucked up as you are inside... just with more money.
I am not awesome, but maybe one day i will write something awesome... that would be awesome.
