There is a theme, plot, or something out there we have not discovered yet. In the grand scheme of things, originality is dead. Hollywood should go bankrupt. Same theme or plot is written over again.

There is originality.
Just, nobody would read/watch it, because it would be too niche.
There is a reason why clichés are clichés. People like it.

Lot's of ideas are already out there, but that doesn't mean originality is dead, it just means that originality comes from how you put the pieces together to make something, rather than pulling something out of the ether. In that way, you can still create new and unique worlds, stories. It's hard to just create new fundamental building blocks, but you can still make new creations with the old tools and materials through cleverly disassembling other ideas and concepts and combining them to create interesting things.

Is originality dead?

Originality has been shot, stabbed, stapled, mangled, folded, spindled, injected, inspected, neglected, killed, and brought back from the dead, just so it could be killed again. Then they set it on fire, burned it down to ashes, invented a machine that re-burns burned things, re-burned the ashes, AND the machine that re-burns things just so nobody could attempt to find a way to reverse the re-burning process. Currently, they are attempting to find a way to Voltron together every known form of death just so they could form Ultra-Mega-Death and have that murder the ever-living fuck out of the greasy smear of what is left of re-burned originality.

Not only has the fat lady sung, but she changed clothes, flagged down a taxi, made it back to the apartment where she was staying, and is now enjoying some bon-bons while putting her feet up on the coffee table as she listens to a recording of the many funny ways I could describe how dead originality is.

TL/DR: Yes.

I mean... It's hard to be absolutely original. Everyone has their inspirations (conscious or unconscious) when making a story. It's hard to completely deviate from what was already created before.

But putting your own take on an already existing trope is a way of being original. Your story doesn't need to be 100% original to be an original work. As long as the composition you've chosen, the character interactions you've written, the way they deal with their life experiences are made by you, you'll end up with an original story.

Even if everything in the story has been done before in one way or another, as long as that specific composition was your own, your story will still have its originally to itself~

It needs to have existed in the first place to be dead now. Simple fact is, everything anyone ever makes is influenced by the things they know or have experienced before. The point is to remix things with your own favorites as the clearer inspiration.

There are only four stories, I am told.

Rise, fall, rise.

Fall, rise, fall.

Fall, rise.

Rise, fall.

Someone's abusive girlfriend breaks up with them, and they don't know how to handle themselves alone, and hit rock bottom before finding a new community and starting to build themselves a new life... that is simply fall and rise.

The Divine Comedy is about a man who is guided through the depths of hell, and then heaven... that is simply fall and rise.

These are the exact same story.

This is somewhat true, in a way.

But it is also completely and utterly wrong.

If you judge plots by Hollywood, which releases huge movies that would be devastating financially if they failed, and are created by companies who are just looking to maximize profit, even if there are creative individuals in them looking to do interesting things... yes, there is certainly a lot of repetition.

But when says everything is the same as you gesture to Hollywood... I do wonder how many movies with smaller budgets from other cities and countries and times you've watched?

There are probably repeating formulas you haven't even seen yet, and clever variations on them.

There are probably new and uncomfortable stories you do not know how to deal with.

If talking about movies, yes.

If talking about novels/WN. Yes and no.

Because like in a half old novel with a movie director chinese MC that i once saw :
"Why try to do a high cost and hard-work movie, that can fail, when its possible to do a easy (=crappy) job (=movie) for low cost, easy, not long to create, that is at least easy to pay back ?"
This sentence in the novel, made me understand why they no longer did good movies and/or try to do high quality ones. If we ignore corruption and etc.

Also hollywood is now dead. Because not sure if you know or not. But now the higher-ups or the directors, are basically doing politics with all this crappy woke-iness.
EVEN if a director doesn't want to, he is basically forced to.
BECAUSE : "networking".
If the director arrived at high enough position to have his movies on cinemas, that means during his growth, he VERY LIKELY used or needed connections, money, promises, etc of others.
Hence, there are lot of his/her "friends/connections" in support of "strong-women/people in color".
Which result, that if he/she is not trying to follow their views, the "network" of acquaintance will disappear. And most likely lose his job.
-------------------------------------

PS : Did you look at HALO tv show ? I didn't, but on youtube, heard its utter garbage, because "John" (people not wanting to call him masterchief) somehow had sex with a human spy traitor for the covenants, in her jail. AND scream a lot during fights.
In interview, the supposed director, explained : I didnt play the games, i read the lore books and was surprised of the immense world of HALO and wanted to show it in the show.
EVEN THE UTTER FAIL of the show (for the fans), director wasnt fired or punished, and still gone doing another work.

Also the sygma actor of TV show THE WITCHER, man that HAVE PLAYED ALL GAMES and LIKE the charact, somehow was fired for latest season.
The dude was the sole reason the show didnt go to flames as he kept trying to make others follow the "original material".
And despite being fired halfway, publicity was done to say "He is in it" as a last attempt to keep spectators on the show.
Also i heard the "female mages" in TV-show, are fat and/or dark women. DESPITE in game-lore explained that thx to magic, they made themselves more beautiful, closer to perfection, "why the f not?" kind of oblivious to do.

Name a color no one has ever seen before that doesn't derive from the combinations of the primary colors.

Well, to be fair, there's only so many things to write about, and once they're already written, you can't rewrite them again. So as time goes on, there will be less and less original topics to write about.

Hm... I guess it's good I did not watch both shows. But if I was a mage I would be a goat.
