I read madness of Lappland a while ago and was wondering if anyone has some suggestions for me of novels with characters who are insane, they don’t have to be psychotic Lappland insane they could be more like the mc of Katelepsis was at the beginning when she thought she was seeing things. was just thinking of this bc I was listing to Mushrooms by Enna that was a fundraiser for mental illness and reminded me of Lappland. i feel like it’s hard to correctly write characters like this so it’s interesting when you see a novel with it. Thanks for your time.

Certain definitions of insane like seeing people who don't exist can be considered insane In that case then my main character is insane as for her imaginary friend chuckles

Haha I’ve actually already read a bit of red hand, I need to read more I believe I was at the part where akagi and dragon girl were having a mock fight at the school. I liked it so far , will def continue!

Ty! Bookmarked, will definitely give it a try, although sometimes I wait a bit until something has a bit more chapters so I don’t get cliffhangered by a good story too hard.
just the description here reminds me of side note, arguably one of the most all around insane books I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. Will check it out Ty Ty.

Hm, the definition for "insane" can vary quite a lot. Is seeing things really enough? In my opinion, a character that does so, but can still act reasonable even with this issue might have a psychological problem, but I'm not sure if they're insane.
On the other hand, I wrote quite a lot of mad scientist characters who are just so detached from common sense that they appear insane, but given their own values make sense.
One of my protagonists is a literal monster (no, not just in mind, she's a slime). Her usual first idea to solving social issues is if they couldn't just eat the annoying ones, without minding anything else, cause that's how they learned it. Oh, and she has a foible for abducting others and turning them into monsters because they're lonely. Naturally without real remorse, as that was just the plan.
But I'm not sure if even this is insanity, because it develops from their experiences. True insanity might be even more detached from reality.

Honestly if you want an example of an insane character done right. Look at Vaas from far cry 3. Everything he does and says is insane

Also if we're talking about insanity. I have to drop this here

Being insane is having the lack of sound judgement to the point you can't sign legal contracts and need a guardian. So like Goku. Hell, that's the normal state of most teen based anime.

I agree it varies so heavily, when I mention seeing things like Heather seeing things as she does in Katelepsis, I think she would be fine if it werent for the impact seeing those things has on her and the impact of trying to hide it and act normal, having everyone not believe her, lack of sleep, paranoid she might have another slip and end up in some eldridge world where she might be killed or worse. Not to mention the Eldridge god peering into he dreams and forcing math into her brain no mortal should be able to comprehend, all those things and how the author describes it is amazing and I’m still reading it rn.
As for acting normal kind of like how lappland does in Madness of lappland, I rlly liked how that was only outside like someone looking might think she’s just a little violent if they don’t rlly know her but inside she’s just completely broken and about to fly off the hinge and murder anyone who looks at her the wrong way.
what I meant in this post was more of a literal, if you go to a doctor they would classify you as being mentally unstable in some way, depressed, seeing things, disconnect from reality etc.
I've had your story in my bookmarks for some time and haven’t got a chance to read it, I’ve actually been looking forward to it so I’ll definitely read it whe I get the chance. I was reading a Kumo no Desuwa fanfic, the reincarnated as a fish one so I’ve been all lit rpg’d out and without knowing anything and the fact that she’s a slime I kinda made assumptions it might be a little similar. I’ll definitely check it out for myself tho.

Well, it's a fantasy story, but by no means a litRPG. The characters are strong but abilities come from natural application. Magic is useful but limited in power. Behind the Fantasy and adventure you might have quite a lot of relationship drama with the monster being like "Yeah, I abducted you and did unspeakable things to you, but now that made us friends, right?".

Regarding insane characters, I'd have in Eldritch this schoolgirl turned Eldritch goddess insisting on still being/living normal. Given that this constantly threatens to unravel reality it might qualify as some form of insanity. At least it's somewhat madness-inducing for people involved with her... and the readers.

ooh nice, most like fantasy moster mc stories ussually end up being lit rpgs so it’s nice that it isn’t for a change haha, and I’ve seen and I actually might start Eldridge as that description sounds great.

All insane protagonist I know some MC might be more evil insane than insane and I see insanity a way of thinking that opposes the status qoute and its sanity.

Could be classified as a sociopath in a horror movie.

Absolute Sociopath.

Sociopath if you are her enemy she will do anything to destroy you and lacks shame/common sense.

Sociopath that just wants to live in peace.

Self centered sociopath.

Should be a psychopath.

You can argue about her insanity but she is more evil? She is quite confusing.

He eats his sister and goes insane.

She is quite murder happy but her actions are somewhat justified will probably
commit omnicide

yes

Advancement obsession + sociopath.

Mentally unstable.

Psychopath.

She doesn't think really human? Okay she is probably not really insane?

Is apparently pure madness.

Trust the description.

Again trust the description.

Sociopathic cannibalXhedonist

Sociopath that wants to be tainted by the wotld and reach infinity.

Insane and obsessive girlfriend.

MC and girlfriend aren't really sane.

I just trust the description.

Copy paste the above.

Sociopath that started wars (in the past).

The insanity of the MC is questionable (for race reasons) but the FL(?) is a psychopath.

Sociopath and should start eating humans later on.

Trust the description.

The same as above.

Dramatic sociopath.

The best insanity novel I know of because everything is insane, the narrative, the world(is named after an acronym of madness), the MC, especially the MC.
I just wanted to say I somehow missed this when you wrote it down forever ago and am loving the fact I came back to this post rn. Ty so much
