I had considered doing a kind of parody of the System stories - "My Kaiju System";
In the year 2245, Hikaru Smith (the heroes usually have an American or European first name and bizarre last name so reverse it...) winds up trapped in an old army bunker during an alien attack. The aliens showed up about ten years ago, and aside from the ability to cross interstellar distances and the tendency to augment their armies with giant monsters, have a tech level surprisingly on par with Earth so the war has been a near stalemate. When the exits seal off, Hikaru discovers an old computer system and, hoping for video games to pass the time before he is either rescued or starves to death, fires it up - only to find it was an experimental weapon planned for use against the first giant monster "uprising" (about a dozen rampaged across the world for a decade about 200 years earlier) but never activated, and he now can summon armor (that he is informed will get larger as he levels up) and a power beam attack that is about on par with modern mechanized artillery, but will also improve as he levels up. He will also gain abilities to talk to kaiju, fly, etc. but it will take time (and battles, lots and lots of battles).

Never got any farther than thinking the above through (and the name only came to me today) - but it would also be silly, like the goofier of the 70s Godzilla movies or most of the Ultra franchise. At least my version of the story would probably be...
But if someone else wants to take this idea and run with it - and decides to make it serious, or tragic or dark? More power to them.
