Basically, I'm using supernatural creatures in my story but I made it so that most people don't believe in them despite them being all over the place in small groups. They disguise themselves in two ways; One type can change into a physical human form for an allotted amount of time which can be extended and the other can alter the perception of everyone around them. However, the latter can be seen through if the person is a supernatural being too or if they have trained to defend against perception alteration. I want to know if anyone sees any flaws in this disguise system or if there's anything I may want to add?

It's okay, though you need to expand more on the first-type since the second-type is at a disadvantage because type 1 can see type 2 but not the other way.

A work around could be that there is a particular distinction between normal person and transformed supernatural creature (type 1) so that type 2 has a way to determine type 1. Moreover, type 1's powers should be limited while in human form. It could then be that their method of 'sensing' other supernaturals are limited/completely removed.

Of course, these sets of logic will not be applicable if the subjects are on a higher power, but we are talking of the general supernatural population here.

But otherwise, if it remains the same way you stated it, then type 2 seems nonsensical since if I can train myself to be type 1 (which is arguably safer and hugely advantageous in this context), why risk myself with type 2 where I could be seen by any other supernatural? It is fairly dangerous particularly if they have enemies who can spam type 1 minions all around, corner type 2 without them knowing, then deal against them easily.

You need to reassess the characteristics between the two types or else one type will flat out wash the other one.

You make a good point with the 1st type so I'll give that some work. Though I feel like I should have explained further that they do not get to choose which disguise option they get. It's based on what species they are. Things like werewolves would transform their bodies while a fairy would alter perception. The difference being that those who can alter perception would be better at magic while the other would be physically stronger.

Only taking human form is kind of strange. Most supernatural creatures disguise themselves as animals like cats or wolves.

The perception filtering sounds like it would be exhausting to maintain, but there's certainly an element of horror to a spook grabbing an unaware human in the middle of a crowded street without anyone noticing.

You might also have a group of critters that don't use supernatural means to disguise themselves. Either they naturally appear inconspicuous- like a stone troll disguising itself as a rock- or they can hide the things that make them stand out... Like with a trench coat or something.

Sounds like the basic playbook from World of Darkness's Masquerade effect. Vampires just used basic mind control to make people forget. Werewolves and other shifters, well, could hide as humans. Magic users go with memory fuzzing again, while the fae cover themselves with innate illusions (an alternative to shapeshifting).

I don't see why type 1 can see type 2 automatically to begin with. Seems more like a magic eye thing. Or in the case of a werewolf, they'll be able to sniff the diff in both cases compared to a standard human smell

Have seen this before in ya fantasy fiction. And maybe in few other genres or a show perhaps? Not that anything's wrong with it, its a good setup for a potential story and fixes the issue of why most don't recognize this insert something going on.

How do you determine if the person is a supernatural being? Is there a supernatural particle or divine rule that state what creature is supernatural in your story?

Allow Ai-chan to tell you how people can see supernatural creatures in Asian cultures.

In Japanese culture, most people can encounter ghosts, though not many can see them. So the Japanese people are extremely afraid of ghosts, to the point of remodeling entire houses when someone died a violent death inside it. However, only certain spiritually gifted people with strong spiritual focus can see or interact with ghosts or other supernatural creatures, such as Shinto priests. So in this case, the rule here is if your spiritual senses are strong, you can see and interact with supernatural forces.

In Chinese culture, most people can't see ghosts, but everyone can suffer their curses. Therefore, the proper use of feng shui and ancestral blessings are employed to either avoid or reduce the curses from ghosts or supernatural creatures. Feng shui is basically science relating to harmonious balance. While most people can't see ghosts, some can, due to psychological imbalance from trauma or accidents. There are also others who can see ghosts from the day they were born and continued to the end of the lives because of an inauspicious birth. Supposedly (could probably be made up) the rude Chinese ghost hunter Xiao Long was of one such birth. The story goes that he was born on a certain day at a certain time when the balance was whacked and the only reason he's still alive is because his ancestor's spirit continues to protect him. So in this case, the rule here is a lack of yin yang balance.

In Malay culture, most people can't see ghosts, but most people can perceive them somehow. In many cases, the ghosts, djinns or nature guardians appear in the form of animals such as red-eyed grasshopper or red-eyed black cat (pelesit), stag (forest guardian), snakes (djinn). When they do not appear in animal form, most people do not notice them. Why so? Because of a 'wall' called 'hijab', not to be confused with what muslim women wear. When you were young, you would be able to see supernatural creatures because your 'wall' was not fully formed yet. As you grow up and gained 'logic' and 'common sense', you naturally build up this 'wall' that basically 'rejects what is not reality'.

Since there is no evidence of supernatural creatures other than what lunatics say, you have no reason to believe such nonsense, and therefore, your wall is strong. But if you truly believe it, the wall becomes weaker. When your confidence is shaken, the wall gets even thinner. When you expect to see ghosts, the wall gets thinner and thinner. If the wall gets thin enough, you can see supernatural creatures. But there is a catch, when you look at supernatural creatures, they know you can see them, and they harass you, because that's what they do. Therefore, your seniors would tell you to ignore them if you happen to see or encounter them. As long as you ignore them, they can't hurt you and will eventually go away. So the rule here is that if the wall that you build up as you grow up thins, you can see supernatural creatures.

So you need to make a rule. What is the rule? What is governed by the rule? Who are bound by the rules? If you do not address this, you can bet there will be plot holes. There is a Malay movie that has this hijab thing, but Ai-chan can't recall what it is. Ai-chan will ask a movie buff friend to make a video about it on youtube maybe because Ai-chan doesn't have the patience.

So I already have rules in place that determine what is a supernatural being and what isn't. Though there are various types as all supernatural creatures are the spawns of demigods that make up every pantheon in existence. Certain supernatural beings inherited magical powers from their parents that allowed them to disguise themselves as humans while others inherited abilities to transform physically into something else as their disguise. Though both disguises can be detected through different forms of magic and training. By the time the story takes place most people only fear the supernatural in a myth and legend sort of sense as the creatures have integrated so well into human society. There is a group that is at the center of the story which keeps the peace between supernatural beings and humans. Members of this group make up the majority of people who can see them naturally or have trained to see them for a long time. Basically, all supernatural beings are born of demigods and whatever they managed to screw. The demigods are known as Elder beings of the supernatural world with power over different parts of the earth. The Elder beings were created by the Lords of reality which control the universe and they were created by a higher being. Though thank you for your input. It helps a lot.

If the rule here is that all supernatural creatures are spawns of gods, then there should be no confusion. Basically all supernatural creatures are descended from divinities.

That is basically it but my main issue is trying to perfect the disguise system. I want it to be effective but not OP or convoluted. The system feels like it's good as is but I wanted to run it by people to see if they saw any flaws that could lead to a plot hole in the future. All of the lore on what is and isn't supernatural has been taken care of.

If the more magic inclined ones can see through the disguised ones, just make the instinctual ones "sniff them out" or something to balance it out or the other way around.
Okay, that could work well.
