Part of the reason I mainly write harem stories is I have a bunch of character ideas I like, and the only way I can get them all in is to do a harem.
Additionally, it also helps prevent relationships from becoming stale over the course of the work, since if I'm juggling several relationships it's easier to keep things fresh.
Additionally additionally, if I think of a good 'scene' or 'event' I want to write into a story, I have several different characters I can choose from to who might fit the scene, instead of trying to force a character into it that doesn't make sense.
