There shouldn't be a difference, the characters should define and direct the plot and the plot should challenge and grow the characters. A story is about people undergoing challenge and how they grow and change and adapt. The plot matters because it's happening to the characters, and we watch the characters because they are faced with struggle and the need to grow due to the plot.

Characters without a plot are stagnant, and a plot without characters is a textbook. Divesting either from the other is an act of foolishness.

Your pretty passionate ?

If you already have an audience, you can just create a poll and ask them. Then tilt the story in that favor over time. They'd understand. If not, do what you're best at. I think having fun writing will help you write longer, and if writing plot or dialogue gets you there, you should do it. Good luck with the writing!

Honestly, both can be powerful — but the truly memorable stories tend to feel character-driven, even when the plot is strong.

A brilliant plot will hook me.
But if I don’t feel what the characters are risking or carrying inside, I won’t stay.

A well-crafted plot can impress.
A well-written character can haunt.

Personally, I lean toward character-driven with thematic depth. If the choices feel emotionally real, the plot resonates more — even in sci-fi or high-stakes genres.

That said… some of the best stories balance both so seamlessly that you stop noticing which is driving which.
