If I said this in China, I would get sniped by the Chinese government, but I agree, many Chinese novels just, suck. (context: I'm Chinese)
Many of it is just rinse and repeat. Some of it is good (looking at the BL comment above) and others is just wish fulfillment.
Another thing about many Chinese novels that I don't like, is the translation. In the Chinese language, sometimes there is no need for a verb, making translations difficult and oftentimes very difficult to read and enjoy. At least in my opinion. If you manage to get both a Chinese fluent and English fluent translator, I'm sure you can add in some words where it's needed and make it more readable, and less MLT like.
