I would say at the very least not to use PayPal for this kind of stuff in the future. It says clearly in their TOS that they don't guarantee custom commission

If you want a refund, Please go through the place you made the payment (like PayPal or your bank) so it can be handled properly.

I'm just reminded at times like these, of all those whiny ranting "every writer should use real artists only", those threads.

It’s always the loud cases that are remembered. The number of writers having real artist covers without trouble in the process are outweighing far more than situations like OP had.

Around 5 months ago, I commissioned an artist on X. The art was supposed to take 2 weeks. I paid €80 via PayPal.

Now it’s 5 months later, and the only thing I’ve received is the linework, with occasional small updates.

It seems like I’m not the only one. Others have had theirs delayed as well. There is always something. Apparently, a family member is really sick and she needs to take care of them. Then her PayPal got hacked. There is always something. At the start, I was understanding, since something can always happen. But by now, I’m just so annoyed by this unprofessionalism.

I know for a fact that she is not a scammer, but she just, I don’t know, doesn’t seem to care anymore.

I doubt I would get my money back if I asked. Should I try to get a refund over my bank?

In 18 years of working on my book, I can't count the amount of time artists flaked like that on me... and even more before that on other projects. One of the reasons I even made it a novel was because the artists I was supposed to work with to make it a web comic back in the day just never produced more than a few outlines. This is why I'm now working with AI; at least I control the full chain to myself. It's not perfect, but it's better than nothing, and I can control quality by myself. I can rework it by myself. I can make a full OST without needing to have 50 bands... It's about personal autonomy ultimately.

My cover, luckily, was done by a dedicated, nice person who offered it for free, and I paid her because I don't pay my artists in exposure (frostbites), but I didn't mention I would pay them before they started working on it because I've seen this pattern over and over of people promising the Moon and delivering a few grains of sand at best.

As for the person mentioning the traditional edition. Sorry, but that's delusional. I've seen tons of friends be scammed by those as well. It is one of the most disgustingly corrupt and scamful industries I have ever been privy to know the backend of. Artists not being paid, or paid in small piles of their own books at retail value because they hid a clause in there... or one who had his IP stolen and the book was rewritten with far-right Christian ideology added to it... or charging the author tens of thousands of dollars for putting it in a generic editing softaware for spelling and call it a day...
