I competed a 31,704 words long novella. It took me four days. I was browsing in zerochan and found a wonderful Naga image, and it inspired me to write the novella. It is about a Naga dungeon core and his love interests. I did put in dungeon evolution inside too, since, what is a dungeon core story without dungeon evolution?
Also, if you haven't heard of it, there is this wonderful site called WriteNext that gamifies the writing experience. You get to set the writing goals and there is even a leader's board. (I am number 31 on the all-time leaderboard, so I don't think many people use this site. But, it is quite the confidence booster.)

By not turning it into either a cooking novel or a sex-fest.
B-but how would I then be abwe to tell about the supremacy of Japanese cookingu? Where would I describe the amazingness of sushi that was folded 10 million times?! What heresy!

You'll be able to do it once you start ignoring that woman who sneaks into your bed every night and her cute little developing body.

It depends on what you focus on. A lot of novels these days have "fluff" descriptions on things that don't have much to do with the plot at all. It's annoying to read. If you focus strictly on the story and only important descriptions then the novel can move at a faster pace and still contain everything important. Have you read old fairy tales that have an oral story telling vibe?

I move my own novel fast except for the specific scenes that the majority of readers are looking for.
