I bought a Steam Deck

My tax refund came in yesterday, and I decided to splurge a little. I was planning to wait for the Steam Machine, but with the hardware shortage making Valve push the release date back, and the fact that they've been dropping hints that it won't be priced to compete with modern consoles, I decided to just go ahead and get a Steam Deck. They're out of stock because of the shortage, and scalpers are already popping up charging twice as much as they're normally worth, but I was lucky enough to find a lightly used 512 GB model being sold on eBay by a reputable seller for just a little bit more than market price, so I grabbed it while I still had the chance. I also bought a dock directly off Steam so I can connect it to my tv. Maybe I'll upgrade to the Steam Machine when it comes out if it's not too crazy expensive.

I bought Total War: Warhammer 3 since it's on sale for 75% off right now. I've heard some people say it isn't Steam Deck compatible, others have said it is if you lower the settings down enough. I guess I'll find out. I'm planning on getting Valheim too.

Any other games I should take a look at?

You can probably try first-person games, albeit with gyroscope on if you want to shoot properly. If you're playing an FPS game that requires aiming, use the gyroscope feature.

Congratulations for your Steamdeck purchase. This is the most popular UMPC in the market, with the most support as well.

Not to mention that Steamdeck always got new updates all the time, and they're usually good ones.

Steamdeck aren't tweak. I reccomend AAA titles. Like Last of Us part 1, Red Dead Redemption 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Spiderman remastered, God of War 2018, Civilization VI, Resident Evil 4 remake, etc

Depending on the console version, you'll only have limited memory space. Also, the battery runs dry fast the more demanding the game. Also, also, the display is still limited by its size.
I definitely recommend classic isometric RPGs, like maybe Pathfinder, or Warhammer Rogue Trader, where the limited information intake won't be your death, as you have time.
Also, definitely Hades and Hades 2. They work even better son the Steam Deck than on PC.
Or metroidvanias.
Also, limited strategy games like Battle Brothers would work, but I risk making this generally about games.

My experience with the deck is only second hand through my beloved, so grain of salt, but she plays Cult of the Lamb and My Time at Sandrock on it. Has a blast

The ram shortage fucked their plans for that. Will probably still release but its not going to be as cheap as everyone was expecting.

Playing Kingdom Come Deliverance on mine right now, plays BEAUTIFUL and goes on sale for like 5$ often and pairs well with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Also heard the second one runs well on the Deck too and I'm super stoked to dig into it when I get the chance after the first.

I really do feel quite hungry for more.

Fair enough. I didn't really like it my first go either but watching the AKotSK show kind of got me in the mood for it. Gave it some time and I really started to enjoy the ride. Probably the show helps a lot too. Most games will run on the Deck with some light tweaking too so Total War SHOULD work fine but I use mine for old games and emulation mostly.

No, I got the LCD model. What screen it has shouldn't really matter to me since I intend to pretty much only play it docked to my TV. That's why I originally wanted to wait for the Steam Machine.

I played Valheim for a couple hours. The Deck paired with my old Xbox One controller just fine, and everything works great so far.

I tried out Total War Warhammer 3 today, and YIKES! When they said this game wasn't optimized for Steam Deck, they weren't kidding! I was able to get it to run, but only with the settings so low that the graphics are sub-PS1 standard. And even then, the Deck chugged pretty hard to make it work. Luckily, Steam has a crazy good refund policy, and I decided to give TWWH2 a try instead. It's not the genee defining spectacle the third game is, but it's it's still a good game and is supposed to work infinitely better on the Steam Deck. I guess we'll find out if I can get it installed before I have to go to work!

How about trying the Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine II from 2024?

It runs, altough at rather low setting. The game's has new patch around 5-6 months ago.

Still drops in performance when you play multiplayer, but single player campaign are decent.

And other AAA titles I reccomend, are the likes of Monster Hunter World. It runs really great on Steamdeck.

And the latest one are the Demo of Resident Evil 9 Requiem. They run really well on Steamdeck.
