I believe the novel did have some legal trouble.
  • Court? Was Solo Leveling taken to court?
  • All good, then. There’s no problem if they call my novel a fanfic since it’s a widely used genre.
Though I may be mixing it up with another. I was however referring to the genre having been adjudicated. Apparently Wizard's of the Coast sued an author over a novel he wrote, which used common classes from D&D and the courts rejected the suit, as the classes "Have a tenuous bases in historical roles of society." If I'm being honest, that's all I recall of the case.

I used "archer" in my book. Damn, am I getting sued? :sweating_profusely: :blobrofl::blobrofl:

How is it connected to SL, and why would people think you plagiarised something based on one word? :blob_frown:
I already told you, but I'll say it again.
In my novel, there's a title called Herrscher, which means Monarch. Also, I've been watching the anime, and I really liked it. I wanted to write a fantasy novel set in the present day, and SL gave me the idea. Now do you understand?
My guess is because in SL, there's also a term for some group or something (don't remember much because it has been years since I dropped it), called Monarch. So yeah, word association.

Which is a strange fear because the word Monarch (군주) is already used in Korean WN titles before SL and I don't believe SL has the copyright to that word.

Even the idea of modern dungeon delving is not pioneered by SL... in global or even Korea specifically... so yeah.
I already explained it to him, look for my most recent comment.

Disney's Robin Hood had archers and so does Disney's Brave along with many other movies, therefore Disney owns the concept of archers.

Unless there were multiple stories like this (quite possible for late 80s/early 90s TSR) I don't believe there was ever an actual court case, just threatened action. And I think it was when Weiss and Hickman left TSR that the saber rattling began (MWP claimed they had ownership of some of the Dragonlance characters, including the one at the heart of this, Lord Soth, and that TSR using them without permission was a violation; they countered with charges of using some game terms in the novels, the lawyers brought on board by both sides looked over the contracts and basically said "we'll make a lot of money on this but nothing will be resolved if it goes to trial")

I don't think they could copyright ideas, though.

No, they own all the ideas. Bought them fair and square from the public domain. Only Nintendo keeps them at bay.

I think that falls under trademark, which they do own, b/c trademarks protect their expression/presentation of that idea. Ideas themselves can't be copyrighted, but their expression or presentation of that idea is protected under trademark. That's why they can snatch ideas from public domain sources and trademark their own take on it.

That's why Shrek can still use Pinnocchio. FOR NOW.

I do not understand. A title and urban fantasy genre are not exclusive to SL, so I don't get why you would mention it when your main inspiration are SMT and Gantz.
