Hello all peeps
while I sat on the toilet this random thought came into my head then I began to wonder what will other authors pick.
For some idea if what I world will need this instead of you know a sun. The world where the residents inhabit is underground, no I won't explain further than that, use your imagination.
I should say that the lights will work just as well as a sun for light source, don't ask me how plants or life can grow without the sun, I'm flying by the seat of my pants here.
Build a world with this "premise" I guess, I'd like to see what you can come up with.
Luminiscent trees are certainly possible even underground. After all, you only need a chemical reaction in order to produce light. Kalium when in contact with water will create a violent reaction outputting sparks, light, Hydrogen and Kalium Hydroxide. In tiny molecular units like in plants distribution system, it could create bright lights without the violent explosions. Kalium is not the only metal that does this, so other metals could do the same thing. This does mean that every 'light bulb' would be explosive, but it doesn't have to be. You could be syphoning that Hydrogen out of the plant or there'd be creatures that consume the Hydrogen to float or some shit.
Alternatively, you could have macrofungus instead. Bioluminescent fungi is well-known and well-documented in our world. While their lumen rating is very low and will not sustain standard surface agriculture, that doesn't mean there couldn't be a fungus that can create enough blue and red light to sustain agriculture (if we use Earth's plants).
In our world, dead bodies left outside also glows. Yes, they glow. It's a phenomenon called postmortem luminescence. It's attributed to fungus instead of natural bodily functions, but they do glow.
