you could always use the common direction such as south west or south east to describe the position using the statue as the pivot

I would probably use the word quadrants or quarters combined with a cardinal direction to describe it (ie, the Northeast Quarter)

That's a pretty good approach. Another thing working for us here is that this is an incredibly common design for gardens around a statue.

I would say... "A fairly typical design of 4 (insert descriptions of what's in the "red areas") divided into quadrants by foot paths in the 4 cardinal directions. In the center of the 4 (insert description) stood a statue (insert description of statue)"

That would be a description of the square. The "insert description" parts for the "red areas" would be whatever you have planned to be planted inside those "red areas."
