How unknown is unknown enough?

I'm struggling to come up with a name for one of the MCs in the superhero story I'm making notes for. I almost settled on Vanguard but, of course, someone's already used that. But that's a pretty obscure hero that I doubt 99% of people have ever heard of. Do you think Vanguard is an obscure enough character that I won't get flack for it?

he doesn't have any movies, so I wouldn't know if he's "obscure" or not. that said, a single word cannot be trademarked or copyrighted. as long as your character doesn't look, think, or act like the aforementioned Vanguard, it doesn't really matter. Like Thor. I can write a norse god named Thor. I can put him in a hero team. But I CANNOT write him in the same way that Marvel did. I can't describe him as being like chris Hemsworth, I can't make him friends with a giant green monstrosity, and I can't write him fighting a giant purple alien.

All that is to basically say, as long as yours crosses to the 'different enough' side of things, it should be fine.

As for readers sending flak your way, I doubt most people would catch that, simply by the name being the same. Now, if the backstory, looks, or powerset were similar, they might notice and appreciate the reference. But that's when you start to get into copyright issues.

Why not use the public domain character instead?

Hm...

What about The Black Terror?

This certainly wouldn't be misinterpreted in the current date and time.

Just call them by whatever they do. Shoots laser from their eyes? Lasereyes. Blocks stuff with shields? Shieldguard. Steals underwear? Pervypants.

I know at least two people who had Champions characters using that name, as well as at least one superhero team called that. It should be a common enough name that you won't get in trouble UNLESS your character shares other traits - same powerset, similar appearance, same origin - as one of the other Vanguards out there AND that one is being actively published.

Hm, no joy?

What about Super-American then?

It's also public domain!

Honestly, as long as you're not using the mainstream ones, you're fine. Vanguard honestly just makes me think of firewall software, the weird "protection" software they put on credit cards or tactics video games. I don't think I've heard of any major superhero with that name.

A quick google search tells me that there is a British Vanguard Comics and just the character you mentioned above from Savage Dragon so you're probably fine. Especially if you aren't going to make the character look like the love child of a White Martian and the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Reminds me of when one of the Predators movies was in post-production. They released promotional material from the movie. One of the predators was temporarily named "Super Black Predator".
