The first question you should ask is: Why do I have stress?

Sometimes people have unneeded or unbalanced stress, so if that is the case, you should consider doing the following:

1. Cut Caffeine (It'll get worse for like 3 days because of withdrawals, but it'll be better afterwards)
2. Get plenty of fresh air
3. Meditation/Daydreaming/Just not having anything acting upon you (phone/computer/people)

If you have reasons that you're stressed though, the best thing you can do is solve the reasons of your stress. If you're stressed because you have work that needs to be done, then doing the work will alleviate the stress.

Cortisol, the stress hormone, actually causes heightened brain and body functionality at the cost of dampening your immune system. This is meant to be a temporary boost to help solve whatever problem is causing your stress. Long term and repeated exposure can cause the opposite, fatigue and restlessness but with no desire to actually do anything.

So, while I laid out some things that can help solve stress issues if you're needlessly experiencing them simply due to being too "hooked in" to the web or social interactions, if that isn't the problem, you should consider restructuring your life. Changing your schedule and sticking to it can frequently alleviate stress.

If that still doesn't work, go see a doctor, sometimes heightened cortisol can be a sign of other problems. My doctor had me checked once, and it came back negative, but it was good to know what I was feeling wasn't because of medical problems, it was just because I was double majoring in two stem fields taking 18 stem credits in one semester, leading to me literally just working and sleeping for 5 months straight with only holidays and about 1 free day a month to not work on things.

If you can manage it, stress isn't necessarily a bad thing. It does make you more productive if you can channel it at the appropriate times. It essentially overclocks your brain. I purposefully schedule myself such that I have bouts of high stress times to be highly productive during, but never again back to 5 months of insane stress. That was about my limit.

How to get rid of stress? I can’t relax and it’s taking a toll on my sleep quality, which makes my mood during the day worse.
You have to learn to accept that no matter how hard you try shit will eventually hit the fan and you can't do anything about it. Stressing over something won't solve anything if you don't have a control in the first place, so may as well go with the flow. Sometimes stuff just happens.

And if that doesn't help, then get a boxing bag. Damn, that thing makes you destress at the speed of light :blobreading:

I don't know if this literally only works for me, or if the speed at which you fall asleep is even an issue for you, but I find that playing my own writing on Word's text-to-speech (the natural-sounding voice, not the robot ones) weirdly calms down my thoughts. And because it's my writing, my brain doesn't feel the need to process it. It's helped me fall asleep a lot easier these past few days.

box breathing
My goofy ass misread this as beatboxing. But yeah, I do box breathing sometimes too and I think it does help a bit.

Being unable to relax is a disease. Forums give terrible medical advice. Do not listen to us who mostly have no medical qualifications beyond maybe highschool biology. Instead you might talk to your primary care doctor and ask if they have any advice about improving your sleep, or a referral to a councilor or psychiatrist.

The best way to have a good sleep is to stop thinking of stuff when you are lying in bed before sleeping. Stop thinking you have to do this and that, stop replaying whatever might be stressing you out in your mind, stop thinking of ways to solve whatever problems when tomorrow comes, stop thinking altogether. Empty your mind completely. Try focusing on your breathing if this is hard to do.

If you have an overactive mind that still won't allow this, find a phrase to repeat in your mind. Like, repeat 'I have nothing to do, i can just sleep' in your mind as you are lying in bed. Doesn't have to be the exact words, nor does it have to be the truth, just a thought you can focus on that can relax you. Make yourself believe this relaxing thought.

Try different types of breathing to see what works best for you. There are a lot out there. Some involve counting and some people do better with no counting.

This might sound kind of lame, but talking to myself kindly usually helps? Especially when trying to sleep, telling myself that I did enough that day and am allowed to rest usually helps quite a bit!

Also some sleep podcasts like Nothing Much Happens are really soothing.

I was more searching for simple things people do for relaxing as I’m a fish under the rock who got out of touch with society.

Falling asleep is not a problem, it’s sleeping without interruptions and longer than 5hours. I wake up way too easily.

? I want some deskjob without having to deal with people.

It’s not lame, but I feel too much self hatred to ever tell myself I did good.

Have you tried listening to music\podcast while you sleep? Personally I don't do it, but a lot of people do.
I do. Without it I’d wake up whenever a car on the street drives by. It’s usually brown noise or quiet classical music. I also desperately need an eye mask to black out my surroundings.

There are those eye mask with led lighting, maybe it can help? I heard you can even adjust what kind of dream you will have with its help. But I don't know how much they cost or if they actually help.
