Hello, I'm new here. Nice to meet you all ♥

I decided to come to you with a simple but, at the same time, complicated question:

How much is too much? More specifically, I'm writing my first story, and everything is already assembled in my head, but I'm afraid it might touch on very sensitive topics for certain audiences. I don't want to hurt anyone's susceptibilities, but in true honesty, this is not just written randomly or without purpose.

As this is only the beginning of something darker and deeper, I would love to have some feedback. Once you read this chapter you will understand what I'm talking about.

Thank you very much in advance ♥

Write what you want to read. If you enjoy your story other people would too.

This is a very ambiguous question.

"How much is too much?"

much = ?

Hi Melchi,

Indeed it is, and the ambiguity comes from the POV that what is a lot for some may not be for others. Therefore, I framed the question this way because, in the end, if I gather enough feedback, I can see the direction in which I could incline the dark side of the story.

I invite you to read the chapter I posted and keep in mind that this is just the prelude to what may come later.

Thank you ♥

I wouldn’t say it’s too much but I would suggest some formatting edits. Particularly applying consistent spacing to the novel.

Hello @Omnifarious,

Thank you for taking the time to reply. The easiest way to address your question would be to suggest you read the chapter I posted in my original comment. That way, you will have the context for my question.

In this chapter, I introduce the dark side of my story, which will only go deeper and darker. Although it is not the main topic, the antagonist has a very defined character, which may be disturbing for some.

Just put a disclaimer on it and you're good. Stuff like "Caution: Chapter may include perversities such as Cuddling, Affectionate Nicknames or even Handholding! Only read if you aren't disgusted by such contents" and the problem is solved.

And let's be honest, the only line you should never cross are the TOS of the site you post on. And even then I've heard Scribblehub here is pretty lenient. There should be nothing against you writing a brutal murder scene where the culprit rapes the still freshly ripped-out heart while they shit on top of the dead body if that's your thing.

Thank you, I was so worried about being reported that I failed to pay attention to other details. ?

DON'T censor the word cock and dick. What the hell? I am baffled as to why thought it was a good idea.
You can't be ashamed of your own writing. If you write smut, own up to it.
Especially when it is meant to forceful intercourse.
“Take um; <still not remembering the woman’s name> ... take her to clean up and lead her to her new... chambers.”
This part does not work. <> reads more as authors note before the final edit.
You can remove it entirely and the sentence would work better.

As for the content severity in general, it doesn't cross any boundaries you should be worried at this stage.
Just don't glorify rape and you are fine.

why are you self-censoring?
Thank you for taking the time to read the chapter. In all honesty, I was following the advice of someone I asked to proofread the story. They were concerned about the 'tone' and suggested some changes. This is my first story, and I felt the need to make everyone happy.

Thank you very much for your insight. ♥

Hi,

Being honest, it wasn't my idea. A person whose opinion is important to me suggested it after a proofread. They were worried about a negative impact.

Now I see clearly that I should have remained loyal to myself and what I wanted to deliver to the reader.

Thank you for reading the chapter and for all your feedback. ♥

the amount of censorship needed changes from site to site. Scribblehub doesn't care much about censorship as long as theres a warning. Other sites like royalroad or webnovel might be more strict about what needs censoring though

@YuriIto Quickest way of figuring out how much censoring is needed is to simply grab the smut tag and look around at their censoring amount
