How many of you read, watch, talk, write, etc. in a language that is not your 1st language?
About half of the stuff I consume isn’t in English, and about a third of that I don’t translate/have access to a translation, I don’t think I can speak any of them to a level higher than a young toddler however….
Any thoughts or comments are welcome.

English is my 2nd language, and also the one I use mostly (including my native).
There are days when I don't write/speak/hear a word of my native language, cause I use it only with my family or two irl friends, while all my work / fun / friendly internet denizens use English :blob_melt:

I have two official languages in my country, and I use them both every day. English too, in media, in writing/reading, and even during the job, as the tools I use are in the English, so I can say every single hour besides when sleeping.

I use English pretty often and I am learning Japanese for like 6 months. For anyone out there who wants to practice english-japanese learning combination, I use an app called humanjapanese and it's really good.

I spent 6 years learning how to speak mandarin. I can speak somewhat but not enough to say I am anywhere near fluent(got another 6-8 years for that). I can get around pretty well though.

This.

Plus, being in the EU, when a foreigner comes into the shop, English is the default language to communicate. And usually, none of us are native speakers, so for anybody native, it would be hilarious, hearing two heavily accented people communicating in their second language.

It is even more funny when the other party can't speak English very well... or at all. It happens a lot that someone comes in, I greet them in the tongue of Mordor, they look at me, smiling like a hobbit, then I switch to english and they keep smiling, having no idea what the fuck is going on. So we start communicating like cavemen:

Exaggerated hand gestures, uga-buga, and showing numbers on calculators.

Literally every day I have to speak a language that isn't my first or the people in this area won't understand me.

EDIT: By "this area" I meant where I am IRL, not this forum.

I speak 3 languages fluently. Apart from my two native languages, I mostly speak in English and I am learning Turkish and I'd say I'm at an intermediate level? So, yes I often end up thinking in turkish too.

85% of all my daily interactions are in my second language (Eng).

90% of my thoughts are in my second language.

I live in a third world country. Nobody speaks our national language, not even the locals, since most people speak regional dialects. I use English more often on a daily basis.

I am currently learning Japanese and Korean for reading related reasons… but I do eventually plan on learning how to hold a conversation someday as well… I’m not very good and it is slow but I try to read said languages at least once a day to some extent-nyah.
