I'm genuinely asking. In the last few years of reading, I think I've only seen a dozen or so ads, and I don't use an ad-block, so that can't be it. How does this place stay up?

Probably because the running cost is not that big. From what isee it mostly serve text and image for novel cover. Dont quote me though.
