How does Trending work?

Hey all!

I just published my story on SH (or, reposted the rewrite. I used to have the original up but this is a very different version). Last time I was on SH, I didn't give it a full shot as I was mostly focused on RR, but I want to give it a fair shot now.

I have gained a pretty decent bit of traction (I think) since posting the story a few hours ago. Is trending based mostly on views, reading lists, votes, or what? I guess I just want a better understanding of the success with trending so I know how to measure myself :)

Thanks a ton!

Only Tony knows.

We had an issue a while back with people gaming the system and it lead to all kinds of drama. As a result, Tony (the admin and owner of the site) has begun tinkering with the algorithm in a manner that makes it more fair, and also takes measures to prevent people from figuring out what it is.

The most recent debacle was people griping about wifu covers being used to cheat the trending system. Covers with a young girl on the cover and almost nothing else did overwhelmingly better than anything else, likely because it tricked people's brains as they were more likely to click on those covers.

This one also has been solved for. So, from this, we can derive some things. Namely, what it would take to solve the wifu cover problem while still being fair. The only method I can think of is that the algorithm has got to somehow take reader retention into account. It is most likely that chapter views are weighted far more higher than total views. (total views take hits on your cover/info page for the story into account. Chapter views exclude those ones and only look at actual views on the chapters in your series.)

Hey! Thanks Jemini. I wasn't around with that drama went down but I definitely get that, a similar thing happened on RoyalRoad so I get the algorithm change. Thanks :)

You have to give both of my stories a 1-star rating to get on trending ?
HAHA!! A 1 star?! Sadistic :ROFLMAO:

Best part is, you don't even have to actually read her stories! Just look at the synopsis and that's all you need to automatically give it 1 star! After you stop laughing, that is. (all in good fun, I left a review with several of my own jokes about my take on the synopsis)

The exact method of how to get on trending is a trade secret of mine, but for the most part if you post consistently at least every other day for a month or so, you should hit trending at least once. Of course, if your goal is to just hit trending, you should probably rethink why you're writing... but I'm not one to judge.

Definitely! I am a writer of passion, but if I can get traction on what I'm writing that works too! :) If I wanted to just get a lot of views, then I'd be writing an entirely different story :ROFLMAO:
