How does Patreon work?

I am a bit confused...

I always see that people offer more chapters on patreon, and people pay monthly for it, but how does this even work? I mean, what kind of chapter do they get, and when?

Example;

"blabla bla you get 50 chapter"

And the novel is on chapter 10 on scribble. does this mean the patreon gets from chapter 11 till 60? and if yes, at once?

They are normally X amount of chapters ahead on patreon but have similar release schedules so once you catch up from 11 to 60 you are back to waiting. Its just paying a premium to read it before the free release.
This.

Yup exactly. You’d get to read 50 chapters more at once. Then every day you’d read the next one. So you basic skip 50 days of waiting, And by paying for the Patreon u support the author.

Hello. Allow me to tell you of what I know from experience albeit little experience.

Whenever an author wishes to earn money from his novel via Patreon, then the author will simply upload the chapters that will be considered as "advanced chapters" in other sites to his Patreon account. But the catch is that the author is free to choose whether to make the post public or private. If it is private, then the audience may only be able to see said chapter if the audience is a member of a Patreon group set up by the author by which the audience must pay in whatever amount the author wishes it to be.

Of course, that is not all there is to Patreon as the author will have to worry about the author's audience refunding their money from the Patreon group if the audience deems the novel a waste of time. Thus, the author is introduced by Patreon to different payment systems by which the author must choose one. It is akin to choosing a class in an RPG game.

but does the creator post those 50 at once? if so, the people who sup later should have less chapter right?

So rather then the "normal" 1 update per day, they get like 4,5 something like this

They will likely maintain XX amount of chapters ahead until the story is completed so you only get less if you are subscribing near the end of the story.

Sigh... Just imagine the author dumping all of his recently written chapters to Patreon, and slap the audience with a pay wall. After which, the author purposely withhold uploading any recently written chapters publicly. In summary, the author may post 5 chapters per day in his Patreon account, but releases 1 chapter per week to a public site like Scribblehub.

If the whole thing about their patreon is being 50 chapters ahead, when they post a new chapter to patreon the relevant older chapter becomes free (post chapter 91 and chapter 41 becomes available for free)

if this isnt what your asking ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

so basically, subbing to Patreon means instant access to all advance chapters (if 50 advanced, then 50 is unlocked)
then the upload date is the same (if they do one per day, the unpatreon gets 1 chapter from Patreon, and Patreon gets one new chapter)

for example
free: chapter 10 -> chapter 11
Patreon: chapter 16 -> chapter 17

a good example of this would be on webtoon, where they have a few chapters you pay for, each week a new one being up that no one has seen yet, and the oldest paid chapter becoming free.

This also works as a buffer Incase the author, say, gets a writers block. They won't have to be without uploads for said upload days, and can instead use Patreon chapters, and then make sure to write more to make a bigger buffer

if writers block
free chapter 12 -> chapter 13 -> chapter 14 -> chapter 15 -> chapter 16
paid chapter 20 -> no update -> no update -> chapter 21 -> chapter 22 + 23

they then release more on Patreon to reach the advance chapters they want

Yeah, I'm just trying to figure out how to upload to it. The interface is not as clean as I'd expected.
Patreon also allows selling full books, artwork, and services as one-time fees, but the subscriptions seem to be their bread and butter.

Yeah, Patreons pretty weird. Also the line between what you can and cant upload is also pretty weird (one author I was following apparently got their Patreon nuked, and I don't think they figured out why, its been a while since I checked)

They get a cut, right? if so, they prob do prefer smaller, but more constant flow of revenue per person since more in the long run.

Select your post, for chapters, use text.

  • Add a title, I usually use my novel's full name. Example: Steel & Mana: Chapter 6969 - Lewdicus Maximus
  • Then goes your text under it.
  • On the right side, you can add them to a collection you made (a different step). I highly recommend it you do that. Under that, you can give them a tag. I only tag my works with "advanced chapters" and the novel's title.
  • Click next if yo are done.
Képernyőfotó 2024-10-21 - 14.25.41.png

  • Click on public, and if you have multiple tiers with different advanced chapters, select the last option.
  • You can also set a release date and schedule just like on SH.

Képernyőfotó 2024-10-21 - 14.25.53.png

  • I have 3 tiers. So, when posting my latest chapters, I untick the first tier, as they only get 1 advanced chapter. This way, those signed up for the first tier won't be able to read it.
The catch is that you need to always manually edit this part on an already posted chapter when it becomes public or available for a lower tier.

Hopefully, this helped a bit.

I hope you're on this website to read and not to write.

I figured out the Collections already but haven't figured out how to do the rest. I think you set me on the right track here so hopefully will get my page (sitting in limbo for exactly one month as of tomorrow) published by the end of the week...

So far I have set up one tier only, and may try to sell one PDF novel as a one-shot. Maybe (keep waffling on this) offer proofing and editing services an a per-project basis too.

You can set up items for sell too. Just navigate to your shop tab and you can add them there.
