How does one find a job?

Damn that sucks a lot. I don't want to look at LinkedIn because it's so depressing to see everyone talk about their achievements..

LinkedIn is great for experienced people who like to work by contracts. Get hired for a specific project, finish that project, and go to a new job. For everyone else, it's just Facebook; you get to watch others exaggerate how good they are for possible recognition from strangers.

Well yeah. People live on this planet with people. Socializing is a must.

I never claimed socializing is inherently bad, but when two candidates are competing for a position, ideally the more capable candidate should win it, not the most likable candidate.

Employees are inherently resources. Let's say I need to hire window washers to clean a high-rise building. The candidate that can thoroughly wash windows in a timely manner and isn't afraid of heights is a better candidate than the one who doesn't do all that, but the one who can do all that might be overlooked due to cronyism and/or nepotism. The fact that so many incompetent people find positions they can't handle is bad. That shouldn't be too difficult of a concept for you, but here we are.

Do you want someone who can wash your car well, or do you want someone who'll miss some spots? Do you want food that was cooked well, or do you want to get food poisoning? Do you want a doctor that can diagnose your problem well or do you want to endure prolonged suffering? etc.

Honestly, I don't know how to find a job these days without knowing proper key words. AI is used to apply for jobs so the candidates are harder to filter through. AI is also used to filter applicants so unless you know the key words it'll be harder to find.

I'd say it's harder to find a job now than it ever has been before. In fact, I think a lot of these companies with AI applications do it on purpose so companies will hire their recruitment branch to find candidates which they then make pay to subscribe. It's all a scam really.

My past experience:

- Job sites: 4 interviews from 20 applications. 2 offers.
- Corporate grad programs: 3 interviews after 4 aptitude tests. No offers. They wanted unicorns. I’m not great at bluffing.
- Linkedin: recruiters reached out to me. 4 interviews from 4 applications. 3 offers.

That was then. Now, in the age of AI, you need the right buzzwords to get noticed. Understanding how LLMs and agentic AI work helps, though it depends on the industry. No one expects a nurse, for exmpl, to know this. Computer sci is in a bit of a pickle, so it helps to understand infrastructure, data cleaning, data structuring, and hit those AI buzzwords.

Fake it till you make it. This isn’t the time to be humble.

I have been making jokes about how it's impossible to find a job for so long, I lowkey forgot this isn't how it's supposed to be. The realisation just hit me yesterday while I was having fun, "wait, how am I supposed to find a job?"

Here are some FAQs for things people are likely to respond with to this question,


Job sites like Indeed are like dating sites in the sense they do not work. I am happy for you if you were able to find your match on a dating site or a job site; but I refuse to believe that shit works. People there are actually, like, the most entitled population ever.

Applying through the company's website, is a trap. Your application will be thrown in a big pile of other applications, never looked at. When jobs actually do open, they are gonna be looking at fresh applicants instead of the guy who applied an year ago. And now you can't apply again since the website prohibits multiple applications.

Lots of people recommend getting an apprenticeship. But I have seen that even for the most basic jobs to just any odd job; you cannot get in without family connections. I haven't taken a survey, but in my limited experience I haven't even ever met a cashier that didn't get in through family connections.

I got my job through connections. Dont know what to tell you. But it is hard out there. Job market sucks right now. Because of "politics".

Ah I should clarify. I got my "first" job through blatant cronyism. I'll admit it. After the first one it was my own work, skills and networking.

While not a job, I got an unpaid internship through family connections. They honestly just gave me fake work to do. Making reports no one will ever see. I was literally just playing house there. Instead of using the software others were using; I was told to observe others how they use it, make a replica of that software on MS Excel, and then practice on that.

Not sure what your skillset is... but most hard blue collar jobs are always hiring... mines, oil rigs, whatever. And they usually train you there, no experience necessary.

Hard work, good money, and a shit load of time off depending on the schedule.

Or you can join the military... lots of pros and cons, but you do get decent pay and great benefits. Hell, I'm 43 and retired with a pension... I don't live in luxury, but I can sit on my ass all day and write now, and I have full medical coverage until I die. Or I can pretty much go back to work wherever I want, or go back to school and have my courses paid for.

The reality is that knowing networking is how you get a job. The world still runs on cronyism and nepotism, so being able to wow people with your charisma (something I don't have) while you're at church, the club, a bar, an elevator, etc. matters more than being qualified. I grew up in a military family where I met lots of hardworking people; the charismatic ones who knew how to make connections are worth 6 figures, and the ones who sucked at socializing now barely make ends meet even though military retirement isn't that bad.
