It may sound foolish but I think if I had one fan. One person who engages in my work and is truly enjoying it, than that is good enough for me.
I just got that. a 5 star review, its like having one fan, my first fan. he said he can;t figure out why its not more popular.
it made it all worth it.
i feel like I got somewhere.
maybe there's a hundred more like him out there.
I can't wait to find out.

the dream, is still alive. a slow burn. the underdog, creeping up. unnoticed, no one seeing me coming.

and its just plain fun.

I really enjoy thinking about and writing my story. If I had 0 readers, I'd probably still work on it. Sometimes I'm tired and don't feel like putting a chapter out, but I wonder if someone is waiting to see what happens next, and I remember the stories I'm caught up on and how badly I want to see what comes next. So my butt finds the computer chair, and I start typing.

I'm new here (like, so new I haven't had a chance to post anything), and I was going to do my first story as a webcomic. I spent three years coming up with the story, tweaking the story, trying to learn different hosting platforms, doing character sketches, and all these things before I realized that this would never be perfect. I would never get any traction at all except from my friends and maybe family if I ever told them. I know I'm horrible at promoting stuff. I know that I am literally throwing a message into the ocean that is the Internet and hoping someone finds it. I know that I write in a niche not many people are that into (fantasy with somewhat weird concepts that riffs off established tropes in a way that can be a bit off-putting at first). I also know that if one person was impacted by my writing (including me), that I did my job. I've tried to chase engagement. It never ended with a complete story or with me satisfied.

If you're struggling with feeling like your engagement isn't enough, I would ask you to wonder why you want engagement beyond the "humans are social creatures and we get the happy chemicals from being accepted" aspect. If you can't find an answer to that, I would ask you why you're writing that story. If you're writing the story as a way to get famous or be known/have a community online, I would tell you to stop writing and get outside. If you're writing it as a way to express yourself, and wanting the engagement isn't the priority, keep going. If you want the engagement as a way to stay motivated, maybe find a writing buddy or someone else who can hold you accountable, but keep going. If there's a secret fourth option, I would tell you to keep going. The Internet is a big place. There might be a giant community that springs up around this long after you're finished with it. You'll never know.

Wow, "engagement" doesn't look like a real word if you write it enough times.

TL;DR: please don't make it about the stats. You won't be happy if it's just about the stats.

Genuine question.
If your story doesn’t get many readers, no traction, no spotlight—
would you:
1.stop writing it?
2.put it on hold?
3.or keep writing anyway?
At what point does motivation shift from “I want readers” to “I’m writing because I need to”?
I’m curious how other writers deal with:
1.low engagement
2.slow growth
3.or feeling invisible despite effort
No judgement here—just honest answers.
I love the game too much. You write for yourself. What story only YOU can tell? Even if one person sees it, that's enough for me.

I wrote for a couple of years without any idea if anyone was actually reading my story because I enjoyed writing it. Did I dream of popularity and success? Sure, but I wrote for the sheer thrill of it.

Tell your story because you believe it's worth telling, and the readers will come. (That said, having active readers is very motivating to say the least.)

It hasn't been popular since I first wrote mine in 2017. It's pretty much a thinly veiled personal diary, after all. So I don't really think about it much.

But I do care if eventually someone will stumble upon it, so I try to make it easier to read, at least.

I don't think most people go in with the objective of writing a popular novel. Sure, they'd like for it to be, but that's rarely the main goal from what I've seen. If you want your novel to be popular, it's quite easy: isekai litRPG or cultivation litRPG with lewd content. You don't have to write anything impressive. Just go on RR and follow whatever slop is trending at the moment.

In my personal opinion, literature should be used to express certain ideas and values. If you write a novel to convey a certain idea or depict a certain blueprint, then this idea or blueprint may not be accepted by the public in the first place. However, its value lies in providing a new perspective or proposing a new idea.

if we write for ourselves, what are we all doing here. I tried reading to my cat. It annoyed the cat.

I write for fun. Hmm... let me think of another way to explain this.

You know how some people sing in the shower even though no one's clapping? Like, cool, concert for one. Except this isn't behind the privacy of a curtain, it's more like readers are just the occasional pedestrians who stops and watches the street performance, but most of the time they're pretending they didn't make eye contact of the wet, hairy, middle-aged naked dude singing like he's tone deaf. We're laying everything bare by exposing our creative, artistic talent, so, there it all is; the Full Monty. :blobrofl::blob_aww:

yeah, thanks for that image.
older guy, naked and wet, all soaped up.
shampoo bottle microphone.
"Hallelujah, it rain-ing men......"
foot up on the edge of the tub-shower, "bringing it home".

I'm sending you my therapy bill.

PS - I vacillate. One time, it'll be vintage Queensryche.
But next time, Phantom of the opera.
London original cast, not the canadian upstarts most people got the CD of.

and while I compose classical music, I can't sing. Not... a... note.

do the math, how my duet with Sarah Brightman sounds.
Like alley cats *&^%ing

I hope my story gets out into the world. I believe that it could be inspirational for the target audience. So popular doesn't really matter to me. But if one person is inspired, I win.
But I'll keep writing anyway.

I second this. The only part I disagree with is that I don't think it's about finding something new. Instead, I find it to be about echoing something old.

I'm reasonably sure it never will.

So...
1.stop writing it? No, it's already written.
2.put it on hold? Maybe.
3.or keep writing anyway? Always.
At what point does motivation shift from “I want readers” to “I’m writing because I need to”?
I’m curious how other writers deal with:

I know that I am mostly invisible on this and other sites. That's fine. This is a fun story, the first I ever wrote, and I put it on a shelf for a long time because I wasn't sure what to do with it.
Then I decided to brush it off, do some editing, and let it do what it wanted. I'll squeeze out chapters one or two at a time on this site and let people enjoy it if they want.

I'll keep writing. It's how I keep myself focused and sane, and I have a lot of material that will never see the light of day.
The odds of getting a book out of obscurity are as unlikely as winning the lottery. So I roll with it and keep buying tickets.
