I played Half Life for the first time today, and...I was underwhelmed. I'm sure this game was absolutely mindblowing when it came out nearly 30 years ago (side note: I feel old) but games have evolved so much since then that even legendary and revolutionary titles like Half Life feel antiquated and janky by today's standards. I honestly wish I had been old enough to fully appreciate this game when it first came out, because that level of "wow" factor is something I don't think video games are ever going to be able to achieve again.

Half life 1 graphic really ages out quickly.

Even back in 2009-2011, just 11 years after it's release, I know Half life 1 looks old.

Even people of 2002-2004 knows Half life 1 looks old, and Half life 1 is just 4-6 year old back then.

Especially after Half-life 2 released.

During 1997-2006 graphic improves really fast and drastically different. PS1 graphic to PS2 graphic to PS3 graphic.

The good part about Half life 1 is the very engaging gameplay mehanics. Counterstrike 1.6, one of the most popular pvp game, is built upon Half-Life's mechanic afterall.

And after you finish Half life 1, play Half life 2.

The graphic looks very good. Most people wouldn't expect them to be made in 2004.

Then half life 2 episodes, then left 4 dead, then left 4 dead 2.

Playing Half-Life back in the day was something else. Compared to other games like Doom or Quake, it really stood out with its unique mix of action and storytelling. It was the first game that gave me a real sense of continuity, and it felt revolutionary at the time. Looking back now, I get why it might feel dated, but it’s still full of nostalgia for me.

That said, while Half-Life delivered that 'wow' factor for its time, gaming is still evolving (well...). Games like Breath of the Wild reinvented open-world gameplay, and The Last of Us pushed storytelling to cinematic levels. I think the next big leap might not come from better graphics or mechanics but possibly from something like AI-personalized narratives-who knows.

Right now, though, the gaming industry feels a bit stuck. There’s so much focus on monetization, like microtransactions and battle passes, and not enough on innovation. Many games feel repetitive, with creativity sidelined in favor of safe franchises. Thankfully, indie games are still bringing fresh ideas. I just hope things get better!

My friend, I was a small dino when Half-Life came out. Compared with the games of that time, it truly was THAT mindblowing. I'll never forget it. My PC could barely run it.

I urge you to try the game Black Mesa. It is a remake of the original Half-Life with updated graphics and many quality-of-life improvements. It also changes a lot of stuff, and is legitimately a completely new experience without losing the spirit of the original.

Half Life 1 had more story than expected for shooting video game at the time. While most shooting games run on a premise and go shoot, Half-life told a story through its maps, events, enemies, and characters. Which was what ultimately sold me. There were so many clever easter eggs in the world as well. For its time it was an F-ing masterpiece as a video game - action story hybrid.

Watch Freeman's Mind by Ross Scott when you decide to finish, hilarious.
