Write a Haiku.
Do keep note that:
□ On a branch
floating downriver
a cricket, singing.
□ old pond
frog leaps in
water's sound
I'm going to start with-nya:
I saw him at dusk
talking softly to the wind
I knew nothing more
Classic structure (In English):
- Consists of: Three lines.
- Uses a syllabus pattern of: 5 - 7 - 5 (It can be longer than that)
- Main thing to focus on: A seasonal word (kigo) or a natural image, and a “cut” or pause (kireji) that creates contrast or surprise.
- Pick one clear image or moment (a pond, a street at night, a sudden wind).
- Put the strongest sensory detail first (sound, sight, smell).
- Create a small shift or contrast between lines (that’s your “cut”).
- Count syllables if you want the 5 - 7- 5 form
- Keep language concrete, show, don’t explain feelings.
Do keep note that:
- Clap or tap for each vowel sound: “sad” = 1, “lanterns” = 2 (lan-terns).
- Silent e at the end of a word usually doesn’t count (“make” = 1).
- English haiku often bend the 5 - 7 - 5 rule for natural phrasing, meaning capture the moment first, rules second.
