Well, you can always smell trouble and you start laughing when you are watching a show and one of the side characters starts to say... "meh... what's the worst that can happen?" (or they'll be like 'its no big deal... followed by that.)

"A good poem should be concrete." (Based out of something real and not your imagination.) That bit of college course advice enforced by a grading system screwed up my writer's voice and style for years... That was when I lost faith in any education system that claims to teach you about art, precisely because they try to fit it into a system which ultimately kills it.
This is how school is sadly. They kill creativity oftentimes.

Every character needs to have a core disbelief and a reason why they can't turn it into a truth.

No, Debra, some characters can be relatable because they hate mornings and are just trying to survive.

"Just do it!" was the worst advice for me personally.
"Die, but never retreat," was the worst advice for those around me.
