The novels where the average joe goes up and fucking kills God annoy me.

I'd maybe enjoy some if they were written by people who could write the average joe become somebody worth reading about and who had more to his personality than average~below-average otaku nerd, but they are rare as fuck.

I also enjoy novels where the protagonist is put through paces, troubles and challenges.

In this light, I wonder if there is a novel where the average joe(jane) starts on an epic quest, but hits difficulties and his(her) goals become smaller and smaller...

I wasn't talking about character being average in the way they behave, it's about the scope of their worldview.
Most of the motivations of the characters written here are kind of small and uninteresting. "I want to live peacefully", "I want to be rich", "I want to save my sister/mother/wife/person of importance" or even "I'm bored" - the scope of their worldview doesn't escale beyond their most simple and basic motivations. Even if they act like manic pixie dream girls, they are still very average at heart.
I want to read about someone who'd be like "I'd sacrifice my life and fight until my very bones are broken into dust for the good of all and take it for granted" - somebody selfless maybe, but definitely larger than life. An actual hero

You can say that Ichigo from Bleach is something like that, with him initially having high hopes and dreams as shown by the skyscrapers in his mind world. It got reduced to his small hometown as the story progresses as a sign of his dwindling hope. He knows that he is no longer the top dog in the big ass world.

Then fucking author made him into one.

Ps. You can have it as a form of maturity, like how Rudeus understanding that his choice has consequences when he let a young adventurer die.

I Got Isekai'd! Well Shyt!

The Goddesses just bring him over just to toy with him at first. But the MC struggles with the new reality he's in as his body starts to transform because of absorbing the mana of a fantasy world.

I tagged it as smut but it might be more of a mature tag because there's the occasional sex scene.

And the MC does get stronger but I want my world's characters to be like glass cannons.

Anyway it's not 100% what you are looking for but you might enjoy the beginning of it.
