I was readin' your bog standard Isekai where the main hero gets hit by truckio and transported into magical world, where... Blah, blah, blah...
***
But what if we follow the god, and not the hero? Follow a young god/ess, who doesn't have much power, and can't offer cheat skills. Having other gods compete with us, and discuss who has the best heroes as if they were pokémons.
We could follow the god/dess wandering through the modern streets like a creep, following and looking at random teens and pushin' young kids baloons under trucks, so teens *have* to heroically save the kids - thus cheap way to know the teen is a good candidate, without using much magic power in modern mana strived world!
Then we could see the interaction of us with the hero, and sending him, and periodically checking (during epic fights, or intimate moments), possibly givin' boon or hindering the hero if it is too easy for him/her.
Gettin' another hero, but this time being at odds with this one, different views, they don't like killing monster children (young goblins), but we need them ez leveling speed, right? Hinder that fool, so he trips and dies!
But WHAT? HE GETS CHEAT OP SKILL from random scroll laying around by helping goblin children? I WILL DESTROY HIM... Only to strengthen him in his stupid pacifistic ways. Humpf *pout*
Of course, with each hero dying, portion of their power is given back, thus investing in stock market of heroes is important! :)
