So, for sneezes, you often say “Bless you”, and for gas of the inappropriate sort for both ends, you say “Excuse you.”
But what do you say for coughs?
Do just bull ahead and say “Bless you”? Or do you awkwardly ask whether they are ok? Or do you rudely say “Excuse you” for the coughing?
For non-English speakers, or those who were simply brought up differently, what variations for sneezes, coughs, and the smelly gasses do you use?
For me, I’ll say “Bless you” to my grandparents, but due to taking a couple Spanish classes a long while back, me and my family say “Salud” even though we probably don’t remember much else because we tried doing an immersion experiment where we only spoke Spanish to each other. We’ll also just use “Gesundheit.” Not sure how that one entered our lexicon.
For coughs, they are always so awkward. Normally I will ask whether they are ok, but rarely is that short and pithy.
For gas, I’ll let @Woolen_Bat_Monkey be the crass one to talk about that.
