Magical Girl origins are often by magic, aliens, or even technology!
I’ve grown quite tired of these seemingly typical origin stories, and suddenly thought of the genetic modification origins of some superheroes!

That being the case, I thought of the girl gaining magic-like psychic/psionic powers

Ooooh, like a human spliced with alien/magical monster genes to give her powers either through some kind of Clarke Tech either in the womb or as a surgery for an already developed person XCOM "meld" style?

Sounds interesting either way. What kind of setup did you have in mind? This opens up a natural angle for government owned supers ala Gunslinger Girl alongside all the politics, moral questions and angst that entails, and I love that stuff.

This actually sounds like a good setup of a traumatic body horror story but with a magical girl setting. I'd read it.

It actually gives me an idea for a character that I'd introduce waaay later on in the story.

A normal guy one day gets kidnapped by a cult worshipping elder gods as he was sacrificed by them to the eldrich beings but escapes the cult.

However, his body gets genetically modified by the DNA of an eldrich beings mixed inside him and accidentally touch a nearby magical girl figurine which his body gets reconstructed into a magical girl whose power comes from belief.

The stronger his belief is, the stronger he gets as he uses that power to stop the evil organization that attacks the world while finding ways to look for a cure as he notices that his body gets slowly turned as a girl each time his belief gets stronger.

Honestly, I don't know. Usually I try to get the design down first then I build story the character.
But I think a gang of villainous girls could be interesting. Maybe this genetically modified one could join them!
