Not all genderbender have the need to touch on complex issues of identity, many are done for comedy and Ecchi.

Yeah, but those ones tend to be pretty obvious that its comedy. Its more about the ones who try to take themselves seriously, but ignore some of the bigger issues that come with attaching GB

Don't complain about those stories. Complain about the ones that are listed as Cross Dressing but somehow is also genderbender, those are the real baits :blob_popcorn_two:
To be fair,
Definition:
Girls dressing up as guys, guys dressing up as girls. Guys turning into girls, girls turning into guys.
That's the SH definition of gender bender.

I honestly also think it could afford to be less specific, since it should also include transforming into genderless and futa and stuff like that.

Why not both?

Also add magic, pendants, Conan the Barbarian, a fuedal magic world, high school drama, a male love interest who is formal rival, strange tentacle golems that don't do hentai stuff, portals, mercenary magical girls, shopping trips, river snakes, the ruins of a dead civilization, a cute little sister, battles, platonic relationships, a dead goddess, sports, a half-troll named Lobar, lots of yummy food, giant tree spiders, punching of said giant tree spiders, rampaging demons, 90's culture, female love interest who is also best friend, a flying bike, an argumentative assassin, family values, and a heaping helping of evil wizards.

Because this is how my mind works. :blobsip:

"I can't believe I have breasts!" the newly-breasted breasthaver boobed chestfully. "I hope nobody trips and falls straight into them!"
And this never happens. :blob_whistle_two:

Rule of thumb: if you can remove the initial sentences stating mc got Gender Bent, and just say mc was that gender all along, and nothing changes plot wise (ignoring Yuri/Yaoi) then that's GB used poorly
this is exactly why i will never write GB. i am sure that i would not be able to do it right so better not to do it at all.
mercenary magical girls
if i can ever get back into actually writing (and get some muse) i need to write a story like that some day.

That reminds me: a lot of the surprise (to the MC) gender benders don't ever seem to deal with the whole getting-a-period thing.

For an average guy with no preparatory interest in transitioning, that could be traumatic in itself. And if they are unlucky, their first bought of PMs might leave them feeling like they are dying.
Oh, OK, so.

We're a trans woman. We also have endometriosis.

It's not quite the same as having a full blown period from your uterus, but with HRT we do have a cycle, and (cn: gore)
we did start passing endometrial clots and blood out of our urethra on a monthly basis.

Suffice it to say, you are not wrong at all.

Mind you, non-endomtriosis periods are much more mild, we're told.

I know just enough about such things to not be surprised by what you described.

I'm a straight CiS guy, but I learned a long time ago how to listen. I am fairly certain that this is why I have been happily married for over 11 years. :)
