In case you never heard of this term, here is a brief explanation from wiki. Flanderization is the process through which a fictional character's essential traits are oversimplified to the point where they constitute their entire personality, or at least exaggerated while other traits remain, over the course of a serial work.

Question to authors. Have you ever done it? Question to readers, have you ever noticed it? What are the worst cases of flanderization you've personally experienced and regreted the most?

I think I did it once or twice with a background character. Can't remember why exactly I decided that the guy will hate birds, but he does.

And as a reader/consumer, I've seen it a lot of times. It's sad, really, when your favorite character becomes a shell of themselves. Usually happens when people make books into shows/movies.

I've done this a time or two, when a character doesn't need any specific growth. It's tough to do it just right that the character can be annoying but still likable

I've seen it quite a few times, especially in some evil MC stories. I think it's something you can do, but it constitutes bad characters. There is no depth at all. Flanderizing is like taking away all of a characters motives and motivations. This happens quite a bit in Japanese stories, and it's part of the cardboard cutout formula.

One thing I've personally seen is the cutesy characters. They can really pull you out of the moment, or the characters that serve as the MCs cheerleaders without having their own goals.

I thought this was about photoshopping Flandre's Scarlet's face into every character--
