Not counting "Mama" or "Dada" or other names for a caregiver, what was your first word? It's OK if you don't know what it was. My parents don't remember mine, but my Dad once claimed that my first word was "Curious George" because he wanted to boost my confidence in my intelligence.
My son's first word (other than Mama and Dada) is "on." He says it when he wants me to turn on an electronic toy, he says it when he wants to sit on my lap, he says it when he wants us to put socks on his feet, and he says it when he wants something since that something is always on something else, such as the floor or a shelf.
I have to say that I did not expect a preposition as a first word. I was expecting him to pick up a few nouns first. It's clear as day, though. It's overwhelming because it has so many uses. He gets upset when I tell him I'm not going to give him something he wants that's on a high shelf. He reaches at the same time, so it's very clear he wants something he's not allowed to touch.
Of course, kids understand a lot of what adults say before they feel confident enough to say a word. He understands many nouns including shoes, books, milk, highchair, and more! He's just not ready to say those words yet. I think I've heard him try a few other words, but he's not using them consistently, and it needs to be used consistently to count as a word.
