First time Scribbler. Does my Story Have a Chance?

Hi Folks,

Firstly I admit that I know next to nothing about ScribbleHub and I have joined just a few days ago. Fantasy is really popular on this site, but I'm not sure how a more classic Epic Fantasy series fits or how it is received by the audience. From what I can see there are a mix of quite specific genres that dominate the charts, aimed at maybe a more modern, younger audience than the one of my book.

What I'd like to know is whether the quality of my story is up to scratch, whether the genre has a realistic chance at an audience. I have two chapters uploaded, but I have the full book ready and the next book in revision, so if you'd like to take your time and look into it later when there's more material that's great too.

Anyhow, here is my story

Competition is fierce these days. So be prepared to fight~. Regardless of quality, perseverance and grit is needed. Lot of it.

just by genre alone i almost wanna say you should do some crossposting on Royal Road. sure they're heavy into litRPG there but i think fantasy would be well-received.

you have a very traditional novel writing style which is a bit "denser" than typical webnovels that are just "read on the go." (they're web lit, so they're designed to be light reads.) it's giving me flashbacks to print novels i've read: elfstones of shannara, not quite as dense as LOTR but within that range, etc. i want to say that your quality and storytelling feels solid, but in terms of audience it may be harder to find readers amidst an audience used to fluffier prose.

you shouldn't be discouraged by that, however. i think it'll just be a kind of hit or miss until you and your readers find each other!

Thank you for the feedback! It's encouraging, I'll give it a shot and upload consistently, and great shout about RR, I'll definitely cross-post there at some point, but probably I'll prepare the terrain a bit more befora launching there, it seems like there are quite a lot of strategy to it, while here to my understanding it's more a matter of posting consistently and see whether it catches on, which is why I chose to start here first.

You have to realize the hard truth: most readers don't read because your content is good; they read because it aligns with their preferences. Even if your content is as good as LOTR, if readers dislike it, your novel will likely be ignored.

If you have your book already finished, then you can schedule the uploads. Don't upload it all at once; schedule it one chapter every few days. I don't know the best time/days to gain more visibility, but I'm sure others know.

Sure, we're a rare breed, we gotta stick together :)! I've literally just joined the discords for RR yesterday, I still don't have an account over there, the intention is to have my story at least a third or half uploaded here to gauge the feedback and make some tweaks if needed. Do you have the same username over there? I'll follow you here for now so we can check each other stories out and help each other if you like.

I say don't worry much about it, the truth is people with similar interests will filter their search and find your story.

It won't happen instantaneously or in a week. But you've made a strong start, releasing three chapters in one go and following that daily. It shows you have a story to tell, and people will take notice. The best advice I could give is you're doing fine, so don't sweat it.

Oh, at topping the charts. Well I don't know. I have only ever cared about getting my books read (why I hate in when pricks basically one star vote stuff, and screw with the average, which should be three so people might look at it).

Yeah, no probably not. Topping the charts is like being a heavyweight boxing champ. You are top of the heap for one game or even a season, but the new guy comes in and he beats you. I just want to win the game I'm at, and collect the paycheck, to use the analogy. If people read my books and talk about them, I'm thrilled.

I know my content falls within a very limited, select niche. Despite being an accomplished writer for decades, I'm not really going to ever have that large of a following.

Thank you, great advice. I am doing that a few days ahead, giving 2 or 3 chapters the once-over and then queueing up one per day

Thank you, that's very encouraging to hear. The site seems pretty good at giving visibility to stories, and even if it's a smaller proportion of readers that might be interested, the important is that they can find it and choose whether they like it or not.

Ah don't worry, I have no delusions of topping charts :D my goal is to put it out there and have a few dozen strangers enjoy it and read it from start to finish.

I appreciate the writer's commitment and idealism. But I also can't deny that I sometimes feel lonely. I know what it's like to feel lost, hopeless, and hopeful; I wrote a story while suppressing months of trauma (read: my fiction is filled with existential human suffering), only to find myself alone. It feels both painful and depressing. But will I ever stop?! Not really, sometimes I just want a break. And complaining or sharing my hardships is a small, human outlet. After all, writers are human too.

I appreciate this. I have the same type of feeling sometimes but expressed in hard scifi instead of fantasy. Haven't posted to SH yet but you are inspiring me!
