Just put my ongoing novel on hiatus. I just feel kind of sad. It was my first novel and writing experience and I genuinely enjoyed writing it. Sadly I came to the realization that I'm just bad at writing. It just feels like a disservice to my vision for the series I started. Part of the writing experience I guess. Just sharing my little development. Any recommendations on some series I could read to get some insight on good writing? Maybe I can learn something from reading other works or something.

“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”

You can check out @Story_Marc 's YT series on writing. Those videos are pretty helpful.

And don't lose hope for your story. You can always come back and rewrite it. Success always comes after a series of failures.

That has to feel really rough. Sorry that you have to retire your story.
As much as I want to recommend my story for some insight, I think the recommendation that would probably be more effective in helping you is the many, many posts of Story_Marc and his videos.
Watch those. Write notes on them. And don't forget to take them to heart!

First experience? I didn't really know what to do afterwards so I just wiped myself with the curtains and left.

To get better at anything, you have to do it repeatedly. I've held onto my sensei's words, and after writing four novels in the span of three years, I returned to my first crappy novel that I wanted to hide away, and it's far better than before, so don't lose hope!

Old books. Like pre-1980s books. Lotr, Dune, Jules Verne books, Arthur Conan Doyle, etc. If you want insight on good writing, read modern day popular books. If you want insight on great writing, read the classics.

What in particular do you wish to improve as a writer? What do you consider yourself bad at in specific?

I can toss out suggestions, but I want to tailor the suggestions to you and your issues as opposed to just throwing out suggestions. I can even point out specific things if you like.

Something that helped me a lot to find motivation to keep going were the lecture videos of Brandon Sanderson. Just look up on YT "Brandon Sanderson Lecture" and you will find a gold mine of writing advice.
This is, of course, just my opinion, but I definitely recommend you to watch them. The worst thing you can do as an aspiring writer is to drop your story or stop writing altogether.

Not to forget, you can always revise and rewrite chapters once you think your writing has improved.

Nobody likes a quitter.
That's what I keep telling my coworkers when they try and quit smoking.

Hate to tell ya this, but... most stories suck. If you want to get gud, ya gotta just keep writing and fail. Then write something else, and fail.
100 hours to fake it. 1000 hours to be passible, 10,000 hours to master. I'm at about 4k.

My only advice, exceed your grasp. Pick something impossible and do it, expecting to fail. You'll learn far more that way.

Just take a break for a bit. You're not bad at writing, you just need some more time a practice. Read some stories similar to your own (Not webnovels!) and watch some writing aid videos. Some of them can be really helpful for things you never realized needed work.

everything in general. English is not my first language so my basics are much less refined. I think you even gave me some great advice on my first chapter just a day ago. Very thankful for that. I am watching the videos you recommended when I have time. I felt that I'm too lacking so I'm taking some time to get a better understanding of how to write. so I'm going to experiment. Like this series that I am currently writing and haven't even published.

If you like, can you read it and give me some input on my mistakes? Just give me the general thing I should focus on to improve upon. I think that might be a good start somewhere.
