There was a time when I was so rigid with my writing style that I’d never even consider using punctuation other than a period. But after dabbling with “?” and “!,” I legit found the prose that I had the most fun with! Honestly, it’s such a breath of fresh air, because the old me would never consider a writing style like this:
Well, that was fun. It’s pretty obvious what character I based this superhero on (it’s just something I wrote on the spot, lol). But here’s the thing tho: I still have no clear idea what kind of prose this even is. It’s comedic, sure, but not something you’d read from A Hitchhiker’s Guide, nor a Lemony Snicket book. However, I am inspired by both, as well as The Princess Bride.
I’m guessing at the end of the day, I’m just developing the style that suits me the most. And obviously, it’s still on the development stage.
Anyway, how did you find your own prose/style?
Behold, the mightiest hero of this city of gold opportunity. Please mind the air quotes when saying that title; seriously, don’t. Ever since two years ago, authorities and even the mayor had sweated bullets, trembling in place as they couldn’t save any poor sap that gestured those fingers up and down in gossip. And dystopic as it was, even their friends saw the light faster than they could say, “You’re a fraud, Überman!” Those eye lasers of his sure could penetrate the city roads like tissue paper, and even bedrock was no match. Good grief.
And so, with every pesky critic out of the way, who’d love to know when the man himself would make another commercial for the troops? Star-spangled capes never lied, at least for those who knew how his leather tasted like. But just look at that smile! He could sell you anything.
