A story where a guy is convinced that they are not the main character but gradually, the story will be in a similar genre to Shadow Slave and Solo Leveling where the earth is being invaded/eaten by a foreign force and the MC is an average dude that finds themselves in a bunch of sticky situations where they have to fight to survive and gradually get stronger. The real MC eventually realizes that the person they think is the MC is not as they seem.

Its actually very surface level concept. The only noteworthy thing about it is the implications that people know they are or are not the main character.

You'd maybe need to dig deeper before any real opinion can be given otherwise you just have standard prog fantasy baseline which is character X gets stronger.

There needs to be more.

The idea presented is not complete by itself and cannot carry the story. Needs to be more substance. Emotional or philosophical.

I would say write down this idea, and see if you can add it to others you've written down previously or in the future.

ok I am still at the bare bones... no bare marrow of a story concept this will technically be my first published novel because I only posted a prologue for the other and haven't published before

I wish you all the luck in your endeavor.

If you flesh out your idea more, I'm sure we can provide meaningful feedback.

One story I have not posted anywhere has an MC who knows he isn't really the MC, but even that is something he's willing to lie about (he takes the idea of an "unreliable narrator" to new heights, keeping secrets even from the writer...) - the real MC, at least in a cosmic sense, is his love interest; but it is his story (first person narration), except when he lets her take the lead...

I don't see how you can do much with this TBH. Like how would not being the MC have an impact on the story? Would there be certain things they cant access? would people react to them in some odd way?

It also assumes there is such a thing as an MC.

I'd say you need a deeper theme for this to work. Something about destiny, or what it means to be a hero. Then you can build the whole not the MC subplot on top.
