I've got four "normal" fantasy books on this site (two of them in the same series) and I haven't been able to get more than a handful of readers. They're all highly rated, so it's not a problem with the quality. SH readers just don't seem interested in stories that aren't porn or some kind of litrpg or cultivation story.

I feel like the bar is gonna be a fair bit higher. Like, if I see a fantasy epic with a trans MC, odds are I'll give it quite a charitable go because there's not a massive amount of pro-level stuff out there. If it's not got that specific hook for me, I might still give it a try, see if it really grabs me, but at that point it's in direct competition with the latest Joe Abercrombie or George Martin that I'm seeing popping up on my Kindle.

Do you think people on SH would read a regular fantasy story that isn't an Isekai, harem, or gender bender?
Yes.

The biggest problem is usually to be found.

If you are found - which is difficult, there are usually only a few ways for one to discover your story - is to hook the readers in.

A traditional fantasy stories either start with the info-dump, which automatically discourages the readers, or have a somewhat generic introduction which doesn't show promise i.e. farmer boy start (or girl, I've seen this with girl too, it's gender neutral start)

An isekai rarely have an unique start, but it shows promise what the protagonist could do. The hopes are usually unfulfilled, and you get the usual "stupid protagonist" complaint...

But farmer boy/girl start? This is practically Wheel of Time or Lord of the Rings all again.

Yes, you could try to start with some politicking, because you saw Game of Thrones, but that's leave the readers without any context without anything for the reader to care about.

To be honest, most people who visit this page do so to read isekai, harems, gender benders, and yuri.
If they wanted to read a conventional fantasy novel, they'd read one of the classics or buy a regular book in that genre.

You're not wrong, but there still clearly are people who enjoy a good conventional fantasy, and there are good novels in that category to be found here.

My Gender Bender story is doing much better than my fantasy one (and both outperform my isekai - though THAT has a better following ... not MUCH, 11 vs 1 I believe) on PocketFM)... So yes, though it probably won't "take off" very well (also mine is a multiverse thing so that might set it in a different category than "regular fantasy")

Isekai nowadays is just fantasy with self-insert modern MC.

Ideally "isekai" stories must make sure that the MC's status as otherworlder is making impact on him/her as a character.

But that's ideal. In reality, that much effort is often wasted. Most of them were just trying to gain reader with as much low effort mass produced bait slop.

Obviously. People wouldn't complain about those or other genres literally every day if there wasn't an audience. Or maybe there's no audience for pure fantasy, and just a huge audience for complaining.

Feel free to check for yourself. You can modify the search with the gearbox in the top right.

Ah, english. 'Anti-trans fantasy' is somehow entirely different from 'anti trans-fantasy'.

How to search for stories more efficiently

by @Cipiteca396
Please use the links to see the images, as I reached the limit of images and media files permitted to be put into one post! Open them in a new window to see them! Thank you for your understanding! If you scroll down in this thread, you can find Cipiteca396's original message with the images displayed instead of links!
To search for stories on the main site:
https://forum.scribblehub.com/attachments/series-finder-jpg.17525/

You can use the And/Or box to include examples that fit all or some of your desires. A green check means you want to see it, and a red ex means you don't want it.

https://forum.scribblehub.com/attachments/tags-jpg.17527/

https://forum.scribblehub.com/attachments/story-status-jpg.17528/

You choose how you want the stories to be sorted at the bottom. I advise by Total Word or Pages if you want a long read.

If you make any mistakes, you can always modify the search by clicking the gear in the top right.
https://forum.scribblehub.com/attachments/search-settings-jpg.17530/

In the "Read -> Series Finder" menu if you click on the "Advance" button, you will see the following dropdown options:
Here, you can set your own parameters to better search. Set minimum released chapters, how many chapters per week it has, what its ratings are, how many readers it has or pageviews, etc. Go wild.
