I don't read or write fan fiction. Quality issues aside, I don't like playing uninvited in someone else's universe.

Fanfic is junk food. Original is authentic food.
I don't see any reason to chastise one over the other.
You either do one thing and get benefit from it or you don't.
Personal experience and personal preference belong to the person.
