End of Year Analytics: A Glimpse of Ch1

I really don't know a better way to format this data dump on here, but I figured I would share the day's labor with y'all. I was curious about the technical details behind some of the more successful stories on SH and RR and did a quick glance of some of the top stories on both sites. I used a combination of Excel and AutoCrit to aggregate this data by pulling it directly from publicly available pages on both sites. It's current as of today and some of the data is subjective based on a gut check of reading the blurbs, chapter 1s, and cover images. The analytics on writing are based on 1st chapters since that is supposed to be representative of the writing style and story premise/promise. Did this so I could compare my own work and oof, let's just say the analytics didn't pull their punches when comparing myself to the spaces heavyweights. A much-needed gut check and some specific targets to work on as I do editing rounds.

If you are the author of one of these reading this, please know this comes from a place of wanting to get on your level.

Limiting factors: Not all Patreon or Ko-Fi data is set as public, limited public facing data for stubbed fictions, & different granularity on ratings between sites.

Interesting trends and speculation: SH readers favorite far more than RR though likely due to how it is counted by chapter on SH. Top SH stories tended to have shorter chapters than top RR stories. RR readers review far more often than SH readers when comparing followers/readers to the number of reviews and ratings a story gets. Some stories are on both sites such as The Runesmith which was an anomaly with weirdly low ratings on RR for how incredibly popular it is and My Life as a Max Level Archmage which was a breakout smash hit on RR and while the story hasn't done poorly on SH appears to have far lower levels of runaway success; when factoring in daily website traffic which according to Google Trends favors RR over SH on search popularity and from that the assumption of web traffic by *2:1 the numbers are 6x higher than the traffic ratio. **The ratio of views that Max Level Archmage has across both sites 6M(RR):500K(SH) should be 1M(RR):500K(SH) and appears be a case of the readership bias at work between sites (expanded upon by Eldoria below).

For comparison, Blood Rose Princess (BRP), has ~36k views with 267 readers on SH. At the same time on RR it only reached ~21k views with 50 readers. BRP is a dark fantasy fiction with a FMC antiheroine with a post-apocalyptic motherhood theme.

In terms of engagement, my fiction is not friendly to RR, but it has positioning on SH. I have observed the opposite, fiction with LitRPG and MMC on SH is less popular than on RR at the same time.

So those are not coincidences. Those have become brand platforms.

So, for those of you, who feel your fiction is less popular on SH, it could be because it is not SH's market. Maybe you can put it on RR. Sometimes fiction is less popular not because the content is bad but because the platform is wrong or the market is not suitable for the content.

Any data with "Royal road" in it is going to be heavily polluted with people searching for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Road

If you make a direct comparison for royalroad and scribblehub with no spaces its going to give you better data. You should also use worldwide data and not just USA.

Thanks for sharing that, I've never heard of that route before and had no idea it would be a confounding variable for the search. Makes me want to do a rebuild ancient Persia run in CK3 and see how developed I can make that stretch of land in game. Maybe reinvigorate Zoroastrianism as Jarl Haesteinn or something else silly like that.

I initially used the same data points but over a 5 year trend instead. The trend didn't fit with data I already knew, It was to flat for a site that's still growing and there was an anomalys spike starting in august which made no sense.

For a USA native it's a large enough place to forget it's not everyone elses default. Pretty common to never manage to visit all 50 states in a lifetime or any of the territories for that matter. Most of my fellow Americans don't even know Guam exists. Heck some of the states are larger than France or Germany. More than once I've driven 12 hours in the same direction and not crossed state lines yet. Still I can see how that would be annoying for the majority of the English speaking world.
