I just want to know some thoughts about what I am planning for a future story after my Gate series. This story is about mages and such. Won't go into detail about the plot unless it is needed or wanted. I like to reserve my surprises. One element is giving me a hard time since I can't figure out a sub-category for it. Was hoping one of you could give me an idea of what to make of it. Also open to any other ideas about the other elements. Oh, and just to make it more fun, what type of elemental mage would you be? Thank you all for your time in helping me with this!

~Added Air/Fire hydrogen detonations~ Nuclear~
Fire- Sub??? (Someone help!) ~Added Current ideas to think about: smoke/smog, explosions, Illumination, combustion~

Earth-Sub Plants (Nature growth) ~Terraforming or Flora growth~ Added idea: Mineral/Metals transmutation~
Water-Sub Ice ~Controls water or Ice~ Added ideas ~Steam~
Darkness ~Distortions/Illusions/Curses~ Added ideas ~Void~ ~Soul touch/manipulation~

P.S. If you have any other ideas about cool elements you can say those too! These are just the ones I came up with for the story.

That's funny thinking about it now, usually when it comes to fire in anime or games its complement is just... more fire Thematically you could go with one of something like Dragon/dragonblood/underworld magic/demon summoning, or annihilation/void for a purer form of destruction magic.

You can also try to break down what fire actually is in real life and see if that could give you some ideas.

Fire isn't actually a single process - it is a mix of many that our minds see as one.

-You have a chemical reaction that is self-propagating, releases energy, and feeds itself with it.
-You also have a reaction that goes from a high energy state to a low akin to a lot of tiny avalanches settling down disturbed by the shock of the first one.
-You have expulsion of new things like soot and gasses
-And then finally you have the heat keeping that soot glowing hot to give the fire that obvious look.

No, because fire also needs fuel but with magic it doesn't, same thing applies to explosions. No explosive needed.

My logic went down the drain there for a moment. Then again, I was thinking of the mage's own bodies' energy as fuel. But thank you! I think I will add that too then! Seems interesting and destructive for a fire mage!

It can be op, but deadly at the same time. That is what I kinda had in mind for my shadow mages, who can teleport limited distances and stuff.

Oh, I see! I like that idea too. I think I might add that trait to my shadow mages since they are the most feared in my story! That would make them even scarier!

Since fire is a chemical reaction, why not just have detonation as a sub category. They are both chemical properties of something. You could also strip the light portion out and go to heat directly. The scariest way to die is to be carbonized instantly without even knowing why. If you can achieve over 550f then it is possible to instantly combust the oils in someone's skin.

Also I feel like steam doesn't get enough love as another horrific way to kill people. It cooks people, it can explode, and you can load it with chemicals to poison people to death. It is also really hard to breathe in it.

For fire sub air will be combustion/explosion because compressing hydrogen and igniting it will cause it to combust then explode

For illumination any thing that heat up or given energy will light up that why metal glow if heat up including air
