Hello,

I'm really embarrassed, but I just can't do this anymore.

I have a problem - a serious one. Whenever I try to create a power system, I link it too much to reality and end up abandoning it because it's not 100% explainable.

If I can't reason something out completely, it becomes unacceptable to me. Do you have any tips?

Maybe I should drop the power fantasy stuff and try writing urban romance instead?
Are there gods?
Are there ghosts?
Are there other more supernatural entities?
How do they interact with the world, if so?

Where does your setting take place?
How does said power system act in and on the setting?
How does said power system enhance/improve upon the setting?
How does the power system affect each character?
How does the power system enhance/improve upon each character?
How does each character use/not use said power system, and how does that reflect on them?

What is the class system of the setting, and how does the power system affect it?
Etc.

Power systems work better if you answer the above and similar questions with it. Only then should you go into the ‘reality’ and ‘science’ of the system. Even then you probably shouldn’t go farther than the atomic level.

If that's so just make science fiction because there are many types of irl powers systems, just not those that give typical fantasy powers.

If you want to do fantasy power system you just need internal justification and consequences for its existence, you can include things like thermodynamic laws or similar, writing such things without explanation is especially easy in a less scientific advanced society because it would probably lack things to understand the power system beyond the rudimentary parts.

Oh yeah - have you encountered any of the writings of E. E. "Doc" Smith? His Lensmen and the characters in the Sparrowhawk series have wild powersets that are rooted in several scientific theories of his era (most proven flawed or discarded since but still...) including psionic/psychic abilities, and powers that ... well, inspired the Silver Age revival of Green Lantern to a minor degree, and the Green Lanter Corps directly (the original Green Lantern was inspired more, according to the creator himself, by Aladdin!).

Just make it sound very professional and under the prejudice of words, people will accept even the worst power dynamics as the best power dynamics :blob_melt:
