I think when someone put my story on their dropped list, my message of thanking them for 'reading' on their profile was also deleted. Does that happen automatically?

You can delete comments on your profile, so they probably deleted it. Why are you thanking the people that drop the novel
This was prior to them dropping the novel. When I thought they read the first chapter I basically said 'thank your for reading my story'. Weeks later I find out my story is dropped and from my profile activity the message I made disappeared.

I wouldn't tell readers thanks for reading on their profile. If they comment in the novel, sure, reply to the comment with "Thank you". If you go through statistics to find their profiles, that may turn away many people.

Okay, I won't do it anymore. I saw other people do it and I thought it was what people do here.

I usually reserve it for when someone gets particularly far in my book.

Like, if I haven't seen your name before and suddenly you're bookmarked at my latest chapter, yeah you binged my work and definitely do not hate it so I feel a thank you is warranted.

Plus, the author of probably my favorite book on the Entire Site did that to me, and it felt actually quite nice :)

But yeah, I wouldn't if they hadnt seriously read yet. It helps that my "first" "chapter" is a speedbump in itself so if someone keeps reading then they're likely to stay reading.

When someone drops your book, you shouldn't thank them. That's creepy. Try my standard "You stopped reading one of my books" message:

You know that thunderstorm? The one late last night? Where you looked out your bedroom window and saw nothing, but then there was a flash of lightning and you suddenly caught a brief glance of a tall, thin man wearing a black fedora and an unbuttoned brown trench coat under which were black and silver running shoes that look like they were held together with layers of gorilla glue, black knee length socks, white shorts, and a heather gray T-Shirt that at first glance looks like it has a skull and crossbones on it, but then you realize the skull is actually two eggs and the crossbones are two pieces of bacon, and he's just standing there in the rain, not noticing the fact that he is completely soaked down to the bone and his eyes are wide, oh so wide, like, you can't imagine how a man's unblinking eyes could be so wide with that much water running down his face, despite the fact that he's wearing a hat, because the water is just pouring down him from UNDER the hat somehow, and the water just FLOWS over his eyes like his eyebrows are doing absolutely nothing to redirect the water around the contours of his face?

No. Not that time. The OTHER time you saw him.

FYI, You imagined that.

Also, I hope you get back to reading my story.

It gets results.

I've actually had people leave comments on my profile. I never read their story, just added it to my insanely long (~200 novels) to read list. It makes no sense to thank a reader until they've either finished or made it a significant ways into what you wrote. Even then, I'd just do it if they comment or make a post asking if there's going to be more at a later time.

Thank them for dropping your series. Now they don't have to read your series and you have put a new thank you message on their profile. Everyone wins.

Hey you were like the first person to leave a comment so I was excited and had just posted the first attempt. Should I post more of it? I got kinda discouraged because it seemed like people didn't really like it.

This was before they dropped the book or at least the number of drop user was 0. I thank them for thinking they read the first chapter, then weeks later noticed my message was deleted and had a drop point on my story profile page.

He was making a joke about threatening readers.

It's your business to post or not.
