This might be obvious enough for some people, but I'm still curious to see the consensus.
Picture this: You're a mere humble farmer who owns a small, but high-quality plot of land that allows you to keep yourself and your family afloat. You're generally distant to any and every political issue, as most of your time is spent tending to your crops in order to ensure a good harvest.
One day however, an interesting piece of news reaches you. The dragons, a supposedly dead race, have started a war with the gods.
You try to keep to yourself, as you always do, but even you'd find that difficult as the news you've ignored increasingly grows more concerning as the world is slowly being plagued with battles of a large scale. Supporters of the dragons (and the dragons themselves) are destroying towns and cities. Strangely enough, they only target settlements known for being places of worship. The little ones, like yours, they usually leave alone—sometimes even helping the least fortunate by gifting them with treasure.
Each of the gods' churches preach their deities' messages, and they all point to one thing: hatred for the dragons and their followers. If you, as a backwater farmer, choose to cheer for one side without openly voicing it out loud, who would you root for?
