Hm... I still think that SHF is far less sociable than other serious writing communities I've been part of before. More posting will probably ease the tension.
Both these sites are literally Tony's workplace tho...

The novel section is much more serious as well in nuf....

Well...baby steps.
The site is, after all, less than a year old. There's still a lot of room for growth.

Still, it would be nice to take baby steps towards a more positive and thriving environment now, rather than have it go completely crooked when it grows and grows.

(Sorry, I don't understand the relevance of it being Tony's workplace. Can you elaborate? :blob_melt: )

It is - writing communities are naturally more serious because they have a focus, I agree. But SHF is more serious than that section, until it becomes a disadvantage. Like, people don't seem to be sociable enough to discuss writing effectively.

Well, to put into perspective, there was a period about halfway through the year - I think - where no one was posting anything in profiles at all for weeks.
Compare that with the up to 3+ profile posts a day, I'd say the social aspect is increasing.
I also hope it doesn't go crooked.

I haven't been checking those forums for that long, but I don't think most people here are unsociable? I mean, the overall mood still seems pretty lax overall~

There are a handful of users that do seem more serious than others, but those exist everywhere, so I don't think it's an issue~

If anything, I'd say the author-related subforums are a bit deadier than I'd expect, but... It will grow with time anyways, the site is still fairly small when compared to NU and it also has its traffic split between Discord and Forums. It's normal to not have that much activity for now~

To me, it's not just how quiet the author section is, but how little gets successfully discussed there even when people reply. I don't really bother with the other parts of the forum because they don't offer much that interests me right now.

But maybe it will pick up after the New Year.

I'm not sure if this forum will ever have that much traffic or activity. Our original writings are hardly as popular as asian web novels. And not many people write, or stick to it. We're kind of like a subgenre of a subgenre. I only got into novelupdates because I was into manga, and I only got into manga because I was into anime. So we're more like a subgenre of a subgenre of a subgenre of a subgenre.

Sure some people may migrate here who have nothing to do with asian web novels or manga and anime, but I think the audience for scribblehub has already been well-defined. It's an audience largely different from royalroad, where I get triple the amount of readers I get here for my current story. Scribblhub and royalroad can both exist, but I think they accomplish different things.

I myself might move to royalroad, as I think I'm more of one of their audience than scribblehub's.

original writings
I like to believe that... and this is just me BTW... that the old~~ @Scribble_Hub is more like early access, where I can write something... see how it forms, rewrite or scrap... get some feed back, workshop it a bit, and learn a bit from it., and boil down all the bits of a story I like to keep.

But then again I am not really a "writer" nor "author"...

I think it's too early to give up hope for SH yet. It is really, really new and it's already growing at a huge rate. Other sites have had a few years to get to where they are now.

What Pearl-chan said, I think you're really underestimating Scribbly's potential tbh.

Like... For now most users are people that come from NU, but that won't be the case forever. Scribbly has an official discord while NU hasn't because Tony-chan believes Scribbly has more potential than NU actually.

And the fact Scribbly has an active developer constantly improving the site is a considerable upside when compared to most competitors out there.

Scribbly's target audience isn't solely of anime fans that like novels and want to read, it's a site for posting any sort of Webnovels one wants (as long as it doesn't break the site's policies), it will surely have more and more people writing different genres than what you see in NU as the site grows~

To give you a notion, if you search Scribbly in Alexa, you'll see that just 3 months ago it was ranked at #80000 in internet trafic, and now it's at #60000, that's a huge growth in a very short period of time. By comparison, RoyalRoad went from #13500 to #11300 in the same period of time. Both sites are still growing, but Scribbly is doing it a lot faster... Which is normal, when considering it is a pretty new site and stuff, I just don't think it will stop any time soon~ (and on a side note, the average amount of time a visitor spends in Scribbly is 12min, while in RoyalRoad it's 10min, so Scribbly is making people spend more time on it in average)

My main issue with SHF right now is the downtime. Not sure about the distribution of users around the world but daytime my time is a downer. That's GMT +8. I'm not worried about it that much though. I still remember when a busy day here meant 600+ online at most. It's slowly getting more active and that's nice.

Sorry, I didn't explain myself, so I'll do it now.

I was more so talking about the forum than the main site. Writers are rarer than readers, compounded with the sub-sub-sub-subgenre nature of it.

I think royalroad users are fans of anime and manga as well, but I also think that the majority of royalroad users and majority of scribblehub users are interested in different genres and writing styles.

There's the base conundrum that SHF's common functions usually are either covered by SH itself or by NUF so it really only leaves the particular SHF specific bits and pieces to themselves, hence why the forum is so relatively quiet.

Well, RR did really boom out of the self-insertish stock standard template trope sort of novel. So a substantially large portion of RR probably only reads that one particular type of novel. Also, RR has an unfortunately sizeable population of shitheads that will harass and reviewbomb novels that arent their ultra-specific type of trope novel and dont have a sufficient fanbase of their own to ward off shitheads by force of numbers.

It's why there's a lot more diversity of stories on SH because, in general, it's much more welcoming to diverse novels. For example, @QuietValerie and her crew migrated to SH because of a big wave of shit from the tards on RR.

Sorry to hear about that. I'm sure there was a reason.

Starting as whining about discord
Devolved into analyzing the site
It could've ended with a horde
It is really quite a sight

An NUF Discord would be the death of NUF, though, as it is with many threads and sites.

What's putting you off NUF? We can maybe help out.
NUF discord?

There's discord but its sorta those unofficial ones but most ppl are from NUF..

NUF Cafe for example
