Don't you just love it when your brain does all the hard work for you?

Wait, that came out wrong...

Anyway, I just had a dream that I think could turn out to be an awesome book if I ever found time to write it. I did a quick Google search and couldn't find anything similar, but I actually have a hard time believing nobody has ever written something like this before. It's kind of hard to describe, but I already have a name for it: steamboatpunk. You know those old fashioned boats with the gigantic paddles on them? Imagine that but, like, a whole world designed around them. Not steampunk on boats, more directly related to the boats thenselves. Has anyone ever heard of a book like that before?

Closest to that idea, I know "WaterWorld" from 1995. But no steampunk elements. Just boats, nations on boats, water on boats, people on boats. Flying boats. Swimming boats. Did I mention boats? Ah, and water. Water everywhere. Also boats.

Sounds like thats just steampunk but with a focus on boats. Like decades said, Waterworld, or by technicality, Tom Sawyer/Huckleberry Finn.

As others said - I know some stories with similar concepts. Sunless Sea, which is steampunk with a focus on sailing the Unterzee. Aforementioned WaterWorld, though that's not steampunk, not even remotely. Several books with magic steampunk atmosphere and flying ships. A single steampunk strategy game with airships.
But not steampunk WaterWorld, if that's what you mean.

Sounds like a ship-centric (rather than train-centric) take of Koutetsujou no Kabaneri/Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, which could be a neat concept for sure.

What about Philip Jose Farmer's Riverworld stories? Recall the steamboat from the TV minseries at least (though the thing there was people from history being reborn in this world)

Waterworld is technically dieselpunk (like Mad Max). Then again, a franchise could have multiple punks; Mortal Engines had like 3 or 4.

Not steampunk on boats, more directly related to the boats thenselves. Has anyone ever heard of a book like that before?
If the people in the dystopia are focused on vehicles to the point of obsession, it might be dieselpunk (regardless of whether the vehicles run on diesel, LOL).

Riverworld, is sorta in that category: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River...rtificial,different cultures and time periods.
Possibly: https://novelbin.com/b/steampunk-sixth-era-epic

Water World is closer to apocalyptic Dieselpunk than Steampunk to be fair.

You're looking for Dystopian Wars. It's a tabletop naval wargame set in the mid-1800s with tesla cannons, airships, paddle steamers, submarines, mechs, steam powered armor, and airplanes. The USA faction has paddle steamers. There was was a mechanical squid-style submarine as well, but I'm not up to date with the newer lore after Warcradle bought the IP and tried to reboot it.

Or are you talking about something like a mechanical planet built on the hull of a massive paddle steamer sailing across an infinite sea of stars and the citizens are trying to keep the failing boilers from going dark, so they don't get stranded forever in space?
