I'm making notes for a future story, where I've got the main character going around collecting people into his party, and it suddenly occurred to me that all the party members he's picking up are women. He's only going to have a romantic relationship with one of them, but does that still count as a harem? I'm not really interested in writing a harem story, but, you know...if the tag fits.

Compare with badly written Japanese web novels. 1 guy and a crowd of women is harem, if he has romantic entanglements with one of them or all of them.

Honestly... I would say that there needs to be at least two of them interested in pursuing that sort of relationship before I would count it.
If it is very clearly a boy and his girlfriend helping/traveling with the girlfriend's close friends, and all of the extra girls leave some distance for them to flirt, that's not a harem.

Technically, if they are just party members with no romantic or sexual interest/involvement between them (except for the actual romantic pair), it's not a harem. It might stray dangerously close, depending on execution, but it's not.

Compare with badly written Japanese web novels. 1 guy and a crowd of women is harem, if he has romantic entanglements with one of them or all of them.
Even in badly written Jap harems, even though the guy is the world champion of dense virgins, all the girls are romantically interested in him for some reason - and usually he is interested in one or more of them too from the start. So there is at least one-way romantic interest betweem him and each girl, making it a harem.

From what I understand the core concept of an harem is that of a group of women that stick with the mc because they are in love with him. If that wasn't the case, wouldn't it just be a simple team where it so happens that only one of them is a man? (or vice-versa).
I think the core concept of harem is romantic and sexual, if it isn't any of those, then it isn't an harem at all.

Nope. If it's only a single girl, then it's just romance.

No, Its only a harem if the women are in love with the mc and the mc with the women (can just me woman love mc but nonetheless).

A harem is either romantic, or for political purposes.

And no, this isn't a harem. People abuse the harem tag. If he only ends up with one person, than it's not a harem.

Or, real world, a bit of both - some romantic ties going in, some that develop, but most of the pairings are due to politics.
I also forgot to mention, that what OP posted, isn't a harem. If he's only dating one, than no, it's not a harem. It's annoying how many people abuse and misuse the harem tag. I don't care how many people are fawning over one person, if they only reciprocate towards one, than it's not a harem.

End of discussion. It amazes me how hard that is for people to understand.

A harem is only a harem if it is 3 or more. Three is the bare minimum.

By the traditional definition of harem, that is not a harem. However, as the Japanese use the word/genre, it can be considered one. Lots of their "harem" stories, like Rosario Vampire and Nisekoi, feature lots of girls going after a guy, but in the end he only picks one of them.

No, that's in line with how we commonly define the term. Multiple romantic interests means harem. Doesn't matter if the point of view protagonist ends bedding one of them or all of them.
