Do you write multiple stories?

I write currently 3 stories at the same time.
It actually kind of helps me that I can switch between the stories, writing at the story that suits my mood at that moment.

The only bad thing is that I sometimes neglect another story for 1-2 weeks because I have a streak in another story.

I tried, but ultimately failed. Being a panser, i have limited brain power to write two stories without planning ahead and I don’t think I could do justice to either of them if I tried to write both at the same time.

That's the entire impetus behind The Nocturneverse.

Multiple stories all set in the same world. Here are the cast so far:

Draven Nocturne - Vampire - Lead vocals, guitarist and primary songwriter for his former band, Ebon Requiem and his current band, Nocturnal Shadows. On his retirement tour.

Lysandra Moretti - Vampire - Draven's sire and estranged lover.

William Potts - Vampire - Sheriff for the Coterie in Sheffield of The Circle of The Crone.

Ronald "Red" Dalton - Magistos mage (Warlock) with The Mysterium. Haunted. Private Investigator. Dresses in western attire and rides a Harley he named Blue Belle.

Neferet-hotep - Vampire - Acts as The Devourer for Meretseger (an ancient Egyptian goddess)

Thrasamund - Vampire - Fought in the Battle of Teutoberg forest and was turned on the first night of the battle when he encountered The Nachzehrer. Mortal companion - Heva.

These are just to name a few. Not everyone gets their own story but here's the trick, play a game like Thousand Year Old Vampire with nothing but the book, dice, pen and paper and it becomes much easier to keep track of. Turn your game notes into a story once you're done playing. Makes things easier for me since I'm rolling (no pun intended) with the game's punches.

Simultaneously. 3 different genres. Revising one volume. And conceptualizing another one. Hahahaha. It just feels better that way.

It's my personal opinion, atleast writing 2 fictions at once is best. Because you won't have enough motivation/creativity to limit yourself to the bounds and world building of one story. I suggest having two stories with completely different plots or world building to actually have the enthusiasm to write another day instead of just. Oh I have to write this but I'm starting to get out of ideas

I do, but they don't go anywhere. I genuinely write a new story every single day, but then I get bored with it when I... I don't know. I lose interest and move on.

Currently posting 2 Main stories, with weekly uploads, and two less frequently uploaded stories.

The latter two are a recent addition. And I have a few stories not posted that I am working on.

However, for the best part of three years. I only worked on two stories. Starting off with one, I added the second story within the same year. I have some works similar, but others completely different.

When I started working on more than the two stories, there was certainly a lot more challenge in keep consistency progress with everything, but that has gotten better with experience. Realistically, two~three stories is probably my golden zone but I am trying to see if I can push myself with more.

I do find more than one really helps with burn out and writers block, because I did have a really bad case of writers block for one story which stopped me from writing anything for it for months (thankfully I had a blacklog to at least keep uploading something), but being able to take a step back, and just work on different stories really helped. I didn't feel like I was "Giving Up" as I was just doing different writing work (in the past when I only had 1 story and I couldn't write anything for it, it felt absolutely awful, but having a second story to pivot to really the mental worry).

There is a lot of personal preference involved. I have a friend who loves their story and writes about 3k a day for it, and I doubt they would do great with a second main story. But for me, the flexibility to switch what I am working really helps the creative process.

I keep one as my active story, with another 1-3 seeing limited updates.

Those back burner stories are collecting ideas and plot twists and being refined in my notes while i write the main story.

Which one is "main" varies. After i finish arc 1 of Beat, Prey, Love (estimated at 75k words) I plan to hop over to ny superhero romance book or my science Fantasy novelette and knock that out

regardless of whether you find writing multiple stories easier or harder, please don't do it. I did that and it's way harder to keep the track of my own plotting for those newer stories I happened to lay down in GDocs.

My best advice is to focus on finishing at least one arc of your story before you make a new one.

I started writing one story. Then to keep my name alive on the front page (not on this site), I started one more. The funny thing is my second story became more popular than the first one. I slowed down on my first story.

Writing multiple stories is fun. However, it does take away from your flow. I made a few mistakes where the story from one would bleed into the other. It gets better though. Sometimes you need to re-read your notes and last few chapters to get back into the headspace to start on the other.

I like writing multiple stories at once but then like...
I use the ideas from one story to another and then I forget which story was following which sequence.
Therefore i don't like writing multiple at once.
I just finish one and write one.

Hm... okay, yeah, based on all the responses here, I definitely think I personally would benefit from writing a second one. I've practically been trying to force myself to write my original story, and haven't actually managed to write anything for it in way too long. So hopefully, this second story helps me get my inspiration for writing in general back, and I can go back to uploading that one soon.

I think writing multiple stories is harder than just focusing on one, though that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it.


If you’re writing one “main and serious” story, it’s not a bad idea to have another “fun and light” story.


Everyone eventually hits that author’s block, so having a backup book might help you stay productive.


People also have different capabilities, you’ve seen it yourself, how some people can almost effortlessly write three or more books, while others struggle with just one (myself included).


If you're planing to do it, my advice just do it and see in which spectrum you're on.

I have three main projects in the works.
I wouldn't say it's harder, or easier. It just works for me, so that's what I'm doing.
As for "weekly uploads" that was never going to happen while ensuring the level of quality that I aim to provide to my readers.
One full chapter per month (~5500 - 6500 words / chapter) for each of the three series. When chapters run longer than that, I'll release them in parts, and that lets me stagger the releases a bit.

The hardest part, is definitely the time constraints (only having 24 hours in a day, and needing at least 6 to 8 hours for sleep), but on my schedule it has been manageable thus far. It would be the same release schedule whether I was working on one series, or the three that I am. Consistency, from what I've been hearing a lot, is the key. It's a marathon, not a sprint, so do what works for you, and stay consistent to it.
