Do you think Scribblehub should ban ai generated novels?

Can we somehow use AI to auto-detect if AI generated stories have ripped off too much of a specific SH author, and do so by only using that scanner on stories that are tagged as AI generated? If we're not going to ban it, I'd feel more comfortable making it easier to create a countermeasure for people who may try to copy too much material from any specific person and pose it as their own.

> Yes, I know that's not entirely how AI novels work. But I do feel that it would attract more of a crowd of people who would use the AI gen tag as a means of hiding outright plagiarism/piracy.
Maybe there is a system already in place that scans for that and I just don't know about it, but anyone who says it never-ever happens and don't worry about, don't be surprised if it shows up not long after AI stories invade these spaces, even if most of us ignore them.

The site content guidelines already don't allow stories primarily written with AI, which I appreciate.

Sadly, like AO3, I don't think there is a way to bam it without taking out legitimate works since moat detection software is useless.

I personally think generating stories with AI defeats the purpose of writing and sharing works, especially when the flood of it is ruining marketplaces like Amazon and putting publishers out of business: https://www.bardsandsages.com/closure-announcement.html

(I wish I could use the formatting features on mobile...)

As someone who spent years browsing DeviantArt, I'll say that the flood of AI generated art there has caused me to abandon it.

I love AI art, but it kills me every time I see a thumbnail and go to click it, only to realize it was AI generated. I've tried filtering out all of the AI tags, but most people don't use tags anyways. I've wasted a lot of time on DA just trying to figure out if an image was stolen and reposted on someone else's account, and now I waste even more time trying to figure out if it was made by a human or just a really lucky AI result.

I don't even really know why it bugs me so much... But I'd prefer that AI generated stuff and human made stuff are entirely separate. ? I'd literally rather browse through NightCafe's results (100% AI Generated) than sift through DeviantArt's stuff looking past all of AI generated results that I would have happily liked on NightCafe.

Though I will say, SH has a significantly better setup than DA. It might work out just fine with release filtering and tag muting.
This part.
Pure truth.

In a perfect world? Ban it completely.

But that would be impossible. Web novels flourish with quantity, and if AI can do one thing good it's quantity. I would speak for the poor readers who unwittingly read generated garbage, but if you're reading AI genned novels and don't realize it then... well I'd rather not sound like an asshole so I'll keep it at that.

This has been discussed a ton on other writing sites as well.

The main problem is that even AI writing identifying software gets it wrong something like 90% of the time. People often argue over whether something was written by AI or not as well. Some people claim words like "tapestry" and "weaving" give away it was AI generated but then someone else will come along saying they use the same words / phrases in their writing and didn't realize it was considered "rare" enough to be sus.

So, if you can't identify which ones are AI or not without banning people's legitimate work, you can only ask that people self-identify their work as AI with a tag. Even then there will be people who choose not to use the tags and there won't be much you can do about it.

A few weeks ago I got into a discussion with someone who had been part of MicroSoft's effort to create an AI (abandoned when ChatGPT got "out in the wilds" and did everything they tried to do, only better in most cases - about a month before they were ready to go beta). He pointed out that writing the scripts is, in and of itself, an art form, really, and that he was now using his free time to do AI generated movies from what he learned (which was what he had wanted to do all along).
Now, with the current state of AI, to get anything really readable, you at least need a human editor and a human to write the prompts, so it should be permissible but should be tagged as such because it is more like "using a crutch" than like "stealing" or "cheating"
